Digital camera reviews of Sony MDR-NC6 Noise Canceling Headphones

Digital camera Review: Decent noise cancelling
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought these for the noise cancelling and I am very pleased with them for the price. It allows me to hear voices clearly and at normal volume but cancels out all the hums, buzzes, etc. that come from fans, flourescent lights, etc.

Digital camera Review: Decent price, decent sound quality, awful noise cancellation
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased my pair of MDR-NC6's about 8 months ago, and have worn them on and off since then. I usually drive them off of an iPod, not home stereo equipment. I found that when I tried out the noise cancellation in the Sony Style store in the mall, it cancelled the general din that is created in a mall quite well, but voices and anything outside of the NC6's slim decibal-cancelling range came right through. It's also very important to note that using the noise cancellation feature in any place with wind is an awful experience. Wind howls through the pick-ups on the exterior of the cans and gets amplified through the cancellers. Because of this, the cancellation feature really only works well in places like trains or planes, and for the price you pay for these phones, the feature is decent. Basically, you get what you pay for.

I'll also add that these are not circumaural, meaning they lie flat against the ear with no padding to go around it. This forces the cans to press the ear back to the head, and after an hour or two, will cause pain in most people that have tried them out.

If you have an iPod or CD player, these phones are decent, but I'd highly recommend going for something that's circumaural for greater comfort, even if it doesn't have noise cancellation. Most circumaural phones block out noise fairly well as it is.

I just ordered a new pair of MDR-V6s which look to have a notoriously fantastic reputation, so these MDR-NC6s are going straight into storage so I can look at them and laugh in a few years.

Digital camera Review: Depends on your EARS.
Summary: 3 Stars

If you have teeny ears, these will work fine. If your ears are a little larger, look for something "circumaural" instead. These hurt after 30 minutes.

Digital camera Review: Deserved the number 3 spot!!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

While I was looking at head phone reviews I noticed that several cites rated these headphones in the top 3 along with Bose and Audio-Technica well for the price these deserve the number 3 spot. Comfortable to wear and light weight these headphones are worth every cent. Given headphones wear out (especially around the ears) I believe you cant go wrong with these. While traveling from hotel room to hotel room they sure help keep the noise down especially when your room is by the elevators. The audio sound is good for capturing the highs and the lows. Overall I believe these will serve you well in canceling 80% of the noise around you.
A great value for the price and performance is well above average.

Digital camera Review: Device classification: "Smart ***" . . . !
Summary: 4 Stars

Honestly, I bought these headphones thinking "Oh, wow! These'll be great for me to chill with while I'm at work or driving or trying to take a nap!" Sure... they... were for my brother abou' the the time of the initial purchase, buuut... who needs brothers anyway? So, they're mine. I'll buy him and my other bro some also. : )

When I bought this headset, I expected HEADPHONES. Normal, everyday headphones with a bit better quality. I didn't give a thought to this noise-canceling stuff. I'm a naturally relaxed and worry free person, so little hums and buzzes and muttering and clapping and clanking and stepping and prepping and slurping and breaking glass and screaming babies and a texas wind blowing 70 miles per hour against poorly built houses and work places and old suburbans' rattling metal hulls and- . . . OKAY, noise canceling! Right!

Well, anyway, on to the review. The sound quality is, as far as I can tell up to this point, acceptably good quality. In fact, for the price I payed, it's spectacular; even pleasing and well-satisfying. Everything is right, and it can deal a happy-cool load of bass. Unlike other, smaller and/or even less expensive models or brands, this set can give hint as to the existence of the LCD volume bar. Now, I've owned several similar headsets before it - all of which have been destroyed by a forgetful leaving and... sitting . . . soooo not fat - but I'd like to give these an 8/10 for their above-basic music (with noise cancel off; HOLD ON! I'm getting to it!) rep.

Standard sound quality: 8/10
Volume Limit: 8/10 *using PSYC CD-Walkman D-NEO50 by Sony w/ MDR-NC6*

Now, as for noise canceling feature, which I know all of you are anxious to hear about, I say "finally." The last time I heard about noise canceling was when people were visiting my house to try to sell me some $200-$600 headphones. This does, yes, exclude that thanksgiving in 2003 when I accidentally invited my aunt's twice removed (and, really, non-family-affiliated) step-sister's great great grandmother's old-co-worker's friend's great grandson and, by the suggestion of my aunt, we all used noise-canceling earplugs for a couple of days.
. . . But I'm just trying to get attention. . . I lied, anyway.

Noise Canceling Feature:

By price- 9/10

[I'm happy to announce that our long awaited budget-friendly noise canceling feature is a hit! It works as Sony advertises... or, you know, mainly. If you understand the technology backing this feature, then I'll leave it at "'nuff said, works as expected to." However, if you're one of those types that can't find a TV remote digging through all of your 40 year old shoes and stockings, let'a'lone operate one. . . Well, it works this way: Sound goes in (microphones are outside of the headphones, on the actual phone's external surface), the mini-COMPUTER ; D inside of the set kills that sound in a really cool way, and you hear the figurative sum of whatever you're playing on a CD player or music device plus everything coming in as a result of inequal cancelation (not-good- killing -of-outside-sound) that was supposed to happen in the set's COMPUTER. Make more sense? Well, no, of course not... but my point in all of this is--- "These headphones will quiet annoying noises, not take them out of existence completely."

By Type Of Product: 7/10

Let's admit it... there are some badbutt products out there. Sure, they may cost you your house, your dog, and your dog's garden-gnome's friend's ex...something...twice removed (whatever) person thing, but they work a whole hell of a lot better when it comes to noise cancellation. So, if you want something that expensive, get something that expensive. Me? I'd just be too worried about crushing or losing it to actually want to purchase it. 7/10 isn't a BAD rating, so don't fool yourself! : )

We have two more to go.

Comfort: 7/10

I don't have a big, fat head. These don't crush my ears, even after an hour of continuous nap-listening, and they don't feel too tight or too loose. Judge for yourself. If you think you should be wearing a pillow, wear a dang pillow. Here's a quick hint: Hurry, get a measuring tape. Measure your head . . . Now, what did it say? No, not the tape! The fact that you actually DID that! You must have a fat head and no self esteem; don't buy these headphones. : P

Build quality: 6/10

Okay, this is an honest score. I don't think they were build with considerable care. Now, don't get me wrong... the design is nice, especially for such cheap "upper-line" headphones... but at the same time, it's almost like sony had them two-piece cup-molded. They could have gotten rid of the plastic witness marks and such, at the very least. This shouldn't matter so much, in any case, but many people have some loose "parts" (*COUGH*) and won't buy a plain product.

Well guys, that's mah review. Just so you'll know, in case you still haven't figured it out, these headphones will PLAY MUSIC and are intended TO play music. Play music with them! Please! If you fly enough to want to go out and buy some $400 headphones that you KNOW you'll only use to shut crying babies and yappy people up with, don't buy these instead. Continue to your specialty sites, where they will happily spread the love of internet virii and false idolatry.
