Digital camera reviews of Sony MHC-EC55 Mini Hi-Fi Component System

Digital camera Review: 4 stars but only because of the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I needed a new cd changer, so bought this one based on other reviews. It's not bad, and I trust Sony quality, but the sound is just not good enough. To get sufficient bass you have to turn the volume up way too high. I had to ditch the speakers and run it through a 3 pc. speaker system to get satisfactory sound quality.
BUT, for the price it's certainly all you can expect.

Digital camera Review: A BIG unit
Summary: 1 Stars

This unit was much larger in size than I expected! Its sound quality is tinny with no bass control. Its controls are not obvious. Love that it holds multiple CDs & was easy to assemble.

Digital camera Review: A GREAT Value (if the CD player worked)
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this stereo for my father who loves music but is not tech savvy. It will take a week or so to get him familiar with the remote (which could be more intuitive) but he is delighted with the sound.
The speaker wires are too short to place the speakers very far apart, and the wires are attached to the speakers internally so that replacement would be difficult, but this is a shelf stereo and it will easily fill a room with rich sound.
There are four EQ settings (Flat, Rock, Jazz and Pop) which should satisfy most ears. "Pop" sounds a bit "tinny" but it would probably be fine for that genre. "Rock" and "Jazz" have a very strong bass, but "Flat" is perfect for Classical which is what this unit will be playing. The tone range is incredible for a unit of this size.
Speaking of size, the stereo itself has roughly the same dimensions as a PC tower. This requires a shelf or table that will provide about 17 inches of space from front to rear, but the width is narrow enough to fit in fairly small spaces.
The appearance is modern, so it doesn't blend in with antiques too well, but it is attractive.
Based on one day's experience I recommend this stereo whole-heartedly!
Now an update (15 January, 2010)
On November 24 I contacted Customer Support to report that the CD player was not working. I had tried mp3 CD's, commercial audio CD's, previously unused CD's, none of which played. The unit was unable to find the disk no matter which slot it was in, how many were loaded, etc. Tech support suggested unplugging the unit, holding power button in for a moment and then plugging in and powering up, which made some small amount of sense. This, however, did not work so I contacted Sony again and they issued a service number and stated that I would receive a shipping label in 7-10 days (from Nov. 24). I received nothing and contacted them about two weeks later. I was informed that the shipping label would be emailed and that I should check my spam folder as it might be there. Of course it wasn't, so I decided to wait to see if I ever heard from them and when. As of today it has been almost two months and nothing has been done on their part. After calming a bit I am going to contact them YET AGAIN but, given this experience, I will never purchase a Sony product again. The radio still sounds wonderful but I purchased a radio and 3-disk player. $100 radios are easy to find, and for another $100 or so I could have purchased a system which worked out of the box or at least had better customer service.
Sionara, Sony!

Digital camera Review: A little big but.. good value for your $$$
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this player because of its value for the money and no fuss system. I do not have an I-pod, and for my needs I just wanted a simple to use system that had a CD player and radio for use in my office. It sounds good, works great. The only drawback for me is that I wish the instructions were better written for the electronically challenged (me), but don't let that scare you away.. I am figuring it out and so far I am enjoying this system and would recommend it for your office or home.

Digital camera Review: A lot of sound for the money
Summary: 5 Stars

I haven't owned a "traditional" stereo system for many, many years and am surprised at the depth, clarity and quality of sound this "compact" unit puts out - and at a very reasonable price. I'm not quite sure why it's called compact - it almost completely covers a 3' shelf - would highly recommend it!
