Digital camera reviews of Sony RDR-VXD655 VHS DVD Recorder Combo with Built In HD TunerDigital camera Review: Disappointed with the Sony RDR-VXD655 Summary: 1 Stars
I've had this unit now for almost a year now, and here's what I have found:
-- It's very easy to dub VHS tapes to DVD, and end result is good.
-- Playing DVDs or CDs works fine.
-- As others have mentioned, the internal clock loses a few minutes a month or so. The auto feature (synchronized with cable signal) does not work. Annoying.
-- Loading a disk, formatting, finalizing are all
-- Hate the remote. Editing disk titles or the title list is tedious at best, the interface for doing so is idiotic.
-- Like others, I have returned home to find that an important program that I have recorded on DVD results in "This disc can neither be played nor recorded". This is more than annoying.
-- At random times in the middle of a timed DVD recording a "Copyright Violation" message will appear, resulting in the rest of the program to be completely black and useless. The DVD usually gets broken into a million pieces after that.
-- The motor spins at times even when the unit is turned off. Turning on/off again stops the motor.
Verdict: Piece of junk. I hate it. I can't understand why there are so many positive reviews. I think I know why the unit is not available any longer.
Digital camera Review: Does not work with Directv receiver Summary: 1 Stars
The "built in HD tuner" does NOT work with satellite Directv. It took me hours to discover this. A couple of hours on the Sony tech webchat (two levels of support) and finally referred to telephone support in order to find this out. The recorder can only operate via the satellite receiver's tuner which severely restricts the recording possibilities.
I was unable to find this information anywhere in the literature or in the manuals.
The "built in HD tuner" may well work with a cable system, but it was unsatisfactory for my use. The lack of this information upfront is what merits this item a single star.
Digital camera Review: Excellent DVD-VHS duplicator Summary: 5 Stars
The Sony RDR-VXD655 VHS DVD Recorder Combo with Built In HD Tuner has proven to be an excellent purchase. I have not used all the features but the copying of VHS to DVD is one button, and just walk away. That easy. Results have been very satisfying. I'm sure there are other features I will use but I haven't had time to do so. I highly recommend this unit.
Digital camera Review: Fine Piece of Equipment Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent picture and audio quality. As indicated by other reviewers, takes awhile to load a disk (has to identify format), and the user interface takes getting used to. It's a computer with a remote for user interface, learning how to use buttons takes some time. Buttons are small. Documentation is adequate. Functionality is terrific. Got what I wanted.
Digital camera Review: Get this, not the Panasonic! Summary: 4 Stars
I wrote a positive review earlier for a Panasonic DVD/VHS with tuner, but then it started locking up on me (just like the other reviews said!), so I am retracting my review. Now, I took back the Panny and got the Sony; what a difference. Very easy to set up; it only took about 4 minutes to scan all the channels; picture looks great on TV and on DVDS, and dubbing VHS to DVD is easy. The Sony just seems more intuitive to operate than the Panny.
