Digital camera Review: Hookup was not easy to accomplish
Summary: 3 Stars

Getting all the cables connected correctly along with the correct input setting for each device was not easy. I tried to record movies from the satellite receiver 3 times before having success. Once everything was connected and set correctly, the recorder combo was easy to operate.

Digital camera Review: I prefer the Panasonic - DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW/RAM Recorder/VCR Combo with Digital tuner.
Summary: 3 Stars

I have both recorders and I saw the difference. The Sony: You cannot record movies from movie channels like HBO ect. In the Panasonic yes you can. The record quality is better in the Panasonic. As a costumer that has both I recommend the Panasonic - DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW/RAM Recorder/VCR Combo with Digital tuner than Sony.. My favorite brand is Sony but I was disappointed with this.

Bad quality in recording in 3H (LP), 4H (EP), 6H (SLP), 8H (SEP)recording modes and cannot record movies from movie channels (Copy protected movie). Well now you know. The right choice right now is Panasonic.

Digital camera Review: I'll never buy a Sony again..
Summary: 1 Stars

This is the 2nd Sony product that has self destructed within a couple years. The last one would not finalize, and this one will not "Format" new blank disk to be usable.I took a chance on this one being a few yrs older. Obviously Sony didn't get the memo from it's customers because their products still suck. On top of that, you can't record stuff you have already paid a fee (from your dish company)to record and watch within the confines of your own home.
Tonight while recording a cartoon for my grand daughter, the dvd player went into a "Format" then scratched the disc then crashed! I could not believe it!
Bottom-line, do yourself a favor and "Stay away" from Sony. Once again, "Stay away" from Sony! I hope they are reading these comments. Terrible product. "Stay Away". Have I made my point? "STAY AWAY from SONY" If it were possible I'd give them minus stars. Did you hear that Sony? Minus stars..

Digital camera Review: Inconsistent Performer
Summary: 3 Stars

I researched DVD/VCR combos for weeks. My husband wanted a new DVD player for our new digital TV and I wanted something to record our TV shows that could be watched on our other TVs - hence, the VCR. The QAM/digital tuner is also important because we often record when watching another program. We first purchased a Magnavox but just watching a DVD was torture. This Sony was a great improvement in viewing but disappointing in one major aspect: the tuner preset. We have cable without a set top box of any kind so the hookup is simple. However, each time the lengthy auto preset was initiated, the Sony would only add about half of the digital channels available. You cannot manually add channels to the lineup, only delete. The auto preset takes at least 40 minutes for the digital channels (even though I only have 11 available) so it is pretty frustrating when you get a different batch of channels each time. Then, when I decided to record a digital channel (the only one that the unit consistently added during the setup), it only recorded in black and white, not color. It recorded analog channels fine. In addition, the unit did not like my DVD-RW discs, freezing the recorder each time so that I had to turn the unit off and then eject the disk. As far as DVD playback, it was beautiful and dubbing from our VHS tapes to DVD-R was simple to do and they look great. I was also able to record one program while watching another - a big concern. After finalizing the disks, they play on every DVD player we have. Finally, I bought a JVC combo for $150 less than the Sony. The JVC unit added every digital channel during the 10 minute auto setup and records digital and analog broadcasts flawlessly. I took the Sony back immediately. I don't know if my cable line is at fault or if it is a flaw in design but I would not buy this unit without a reasonable return policy. One last caveat: the Sony does not come with any cables other than an RF cable - if you wish to hook it up to your TV, you will need to have an HDMI, S-Video, or other audio/video cable. I give it 3 stars because of the dubbing and DVD playback but you'll be reorganizing your DVD collection while it looks for your channels.

Digital camera Review: Instructions? Who wrote this stuff?
Summary: 4 Stars

With the switch to all digital tv, I wanted a device to record both dvds and tapes and also a built in tuner to receive the hd programming. I did a lot of Google searching of different products and decided that the Sony seemed to be the best deal for what I wanted. What I didn't know was how convoluted and clumsy the instructions were especially for the dvd recording procedure. The vcr parts were pretty straightforward, but the dvd procedures were scattered all over the manual and too often footnoted in ways that seem unnecessary.
So, in the course of trying (and I'm still trying) to figure it all out, count on wasting a few disc's as you worm your way through these unnecessarily sometimes unclear and scattered instructions for dvd recording.
On the whole, the results of the picture/sound quality of the recordings are very good. I wish I could say the same about the instruction manual.
