I have bought two of the Sony SLV-D380P dvd/vcr combos in the last two years. All the negative reviews about this item are true. After about a year, the vcr function in the first one just completely crapped out. It wouldn't tape and it wouldn't play anything back. I finally went to the local appliance store where I bought it & told the salesperson what I wanted: A good, dependable dvd/vcr combo that wasn't a Sony. He told me that they were the best,and in fact that same model was what he was pushing me to get. I asked about other brands, specifically Toshiba (by the way I once had a JVC which was absolutely junk. A friend also had the same model JVC, and she had the same experience). The salesperson said that Toshiba's were way too complicated and that Sony was the best. So I was talked into buying another one. Well after about 3 or 4 months, the rewind has started to go. It makes a terrible noise when rewinding & you have to stop, wait, and then continue rewinding, repeating this process more than once. I wish electroncs manufacturers would realize that because vcr tapes have been around for a very long time, a lot of people are and will continue to look for dependable vcr players. Sure, we can install separate vcr and dvd units, but the combos are so much more convenient. Can anyone out there recommend any good ones?
