Digital camera reviews of Sony SRF-M37V FM/AM/Weather/TV Radio Walkman with 25 Memory PresetsDigital camera Review: AM Radio Delight Summary: 4 StarsThe Sony SRF-M37V is a palm-sized Walkman type radio that requires headphones. It uses one AAA battery providing reasonable battery life. It is quite superior for AM listening and has become a favorite with hobby DXers. If you are trying to hear a distant talk show, this radio is a great choice. The FM section is average in both selectivity and sensitivity. Your headphone cord doubles as its FM antenna. You'll hear local stations but don't expect miracles. Weather band reception was an afterthought. Sony's engineers did not add narrowband circuitry appropriate for receiving weather band stations. By using the same broadband circuitry used for broadcast FM, you'll hear nearly all seven weather frequencies at once regardless of which channel you have chosen. Unless you are fairly close to a weather band transmitter, do not expect to hear anything on this band. The radio does include a time-of-day clock, but it can only be read when the unit is off. Finally, all the pushbuttons on the unit are quite sensitive and can be accidentally pressed especially the power on/off button. Learn to use the button lock-out switch on the top of the set. It will cure your aggravation. Instead of the SRF-M37V, I would highly recommend the very basic Sony SRF-59 all-analog Walkman radio. It's half the price, works just as well on AM and sounds better. The only thing you will lose is the convenient pushbutton presets offered on the SRF-M37V. Either way, you can't go wrong. Both Sony models are good values.
Digital camera Review: The best of a not so good choices Summary: 4 StarsI had purchased and used small pocket radios that were sold by Radio Shack for many years. The 3 or 4 of them that I purchased eventually failed after quite some time. The thing that was so good about these Radio Shack choices(there were two different models, both manufactured by Optimus) was that they not only had direct push button tuning, like this Sony radio, but they also had a speaker so that you were not forced to tethered to an earpiece. Well Radio Shack in their infinite wisdom ceased to sell their products, so after much searching for a reasonable replacement(no one makes a speaker/push button pocket radio that I've been able to find) I found these small Sony's several years ago. I purchased 4 of them(because of my experience with Radio Shack ceasing production and not wanting to lose something that was at least ok). In 4 years none of them have failed and expcept for lack of a speaker, they've performed well. The earpieces that come with the radio is rather lousy. I have found an earbud sold by Walmart that has a somewhat rubbery textured surface that seems to fit my ear well. They are like the Ipod earbuds but instead of slick plastic that tend to fall out of the ear, these remain in place. Forget the name of the buds, but I know Walmart still sells for about 15 bucks. They come in many colors. This radio works very well when I'm at the gym or listening to AM while eating lunch. Earbuds are fine for these situations but for others a speaker would be immensely better. Why had Sony not figured this out, or someone else. As noted it can be done, witness my Radio Shack comments above. After 30 different mp3 players and a hundred different cell phone models, it is time someone made at least one speaker driven, push button radio.
Digital camera Review: wrong order sent Summary: 1 StarsThe wrong item was sent and I returned it to vendor who was very cooperative.
Digital camera Review: Sony SRF-M37V Summary: 1 StarsMerchandise was promised by June 29th. It's July 13th and I haven't received it yet. My last request for an expected ship date was unanswered.
Digital camera Review: Small Walkman Summary: 4 StarsI was primarily interested in this as an AM receiver (evenings). Reception of Chicago stations (150 miles away) is better than with previous radio.
Good feature: station presets are NOT lost when battery gets too low for radio operation
Bad feature: no "pilot light" to indicate that radio is turned on (and drawing battery power)
I believe this model has recently been replaced by a slightly different model.
