Digital camera reviews of Sony STR-DH700 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver (Black)Digital camera Review: Good Starter 7.1 Summary: 4 Stars
Have Sony SS 890 for rear speakers & Bose for front with Sony rear surrounds, Polk TS10 subwoofer. Use Direct TV HD/DVR HDMI with 50 Panasonic plasma & Panasonic Bluray works like a charm. The Sound leaves a little to be desired on music but works well with Bluray on movies. Its ease of use and hookup outweigh that minor flaw.
Digital camera Review: Good enough for me Summary: 4 Stars
This system was for my room with the idea that one day it might be my own living room entertainment system. This system comes with its own self calibration, and is capable of 7.1 surround out of the box. Got a 200 watt down blast Yamaha sub-woofer and truthfully have not had a chance to use it at full capacity, but why would anyone want to. I could light up a backyard with this system if I wanted. At full blast I can clearly hear this system throughout the house.
I am sure this system is not as nice as some of the more expensive systems, however, this equiptment is totally capable of taking care of any of your in house listening enjoyment. So, unless you are a professional and have to entertain a ball room, you will not go wrong with this system. As for the three on the set up of this system. It is a stereo system, setting it up is always going to suck. You have a load of wires and jacks to hook up. You want decent sound, you are going to have to do the hoof work.
Digital camera Review: Good for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I got this receiver about 3 weeks ago as a replacement to my old Sony receiver. This receiver sounds great when connected via hdmi and/or optical sound cable. You can also assign optical or coax cable ports to be used with other inputs which I found very useful. Active HDMI ports make life easier to connect both audio and video. You can also rename the inputs. The sound quality is amazingly good for a unit that doesn't break your wallet. This receiver does not decode TrueHD or DTS-Master Audio which is a downside, but I don't mind. However, I had a hard time setting up this receiver. I connected 5 speakers and a subwoofer and used the AUTO Calibration feature. After the calibration was complete, I inserted a blu-ray movie in my PS3 and got ready for some action. I realized that the the subwoofer was only working when extreme explosions happened. All the other times, my regular speakers were trying to recreate the bass. After a lot of searching around online and the receiver menu, I realized that the auto calibration had set all my speakers to "LARGE"(even though they are not) which made majority of the bass get redirected my speakers instead of my subwoofer. I then manually changed it to "SMALL" and then everything worked perfectly! Just beware of the auto calibration as a tip to future buyers. Overall, great buy!
Digital camera Review: Good value for a receiver to integrate HDMI blu ray and TV Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the Sony STR DH700 to use with a new HDMI blu ray disc player and plasma TV. It serves this purpose well, is easy to integrate with the other components, is straightforward in terms of using the different sound options, and setup my 5.1 speaker system automatically with sterling results. I'm not an audiophile; that said, I am blown away by the versatility of this receiver. Blu Ray discs are spectacular and music played through my ipod or from cd's is wonderful--noticeably better than that produced by my previous high end Onkyo receiver. The difference likely is a result of my never learning how to manually set up the Onkyo receiver. The Sony is much more intuitive to use, so, for someone like myself, who likes and can tell the difference but doesn't have the inclination to master the intricacies of a receiver's controls, this is a very good purchase. Also, the price through Amazon, with free shipping, makes this receiver a very good value.
Digital camera Review: Good value, but some disappointments... Summary: 4 Stars
I owned an earlier generation Sony STR-DE845 for 10 years, which worked flawlessly until something electrical finally burned itself out.
I bought the STR-DH700 because we eventually plan to upgrade our TV to an HD set of some sort and I was presuming that 7.1 would slowly begin to replace the 5.1 format.
Overall I'm as happy with this replacement as I was with the original, save for a few non-trivial items:
1. The power-up and power-down times seem inordinately long...and rather loud when the system finally clicks on; sometimes it can seem like a lifetime if you were in a hurry to see something.
2. The volume seems quite low overall; I have an excellent JBL surround sound speaker system and I'm at well over twice the volume setting compared with my old receiver.
3. There appears to be NO WAY to adjust the volume of the center, front-L/R, rear-L/R or subwoofer independently. I'm mystified because this was a handy feature on the STR-DE845. What gives?
4. Unfortunately, the lovely remote that comes with this receiver cannot control our not-so-old Panasonic Tau TV, and so we've had to ditch it and buy a really ugly universal remote that can't control even 1/4 of all the receiver functions. Boy was that disappointing.
But in terms of sound quality and flexibility it's hard to beat this price.
