Digital camera reviews of Sony STRDG720 7.1 Audio Video Receiver - BlackDigital camera Review: Disappointed, should have gone with the Onkyo 606B Summary: 2 Stars
Received the STR DG 720 for Christmas from my wife. I settled for this receiver (really wanted Onkyo 606B, but was trying to save some cash) as it had most of the primary functions I was looking for: multiple HDMI inputs, sound via HDMI and a reasonable price ($213 from Amazon) Was disappointed that the Wii could not pass through (only would get sound) Component input from Wii will not make it to HDMI output. Sony said the 720 won't up convert which I was aware of. What I wasn't aware of was that the component input won't pass through to HDMI at all. It's HDMI in and HDMI out, even if you don't need the video up convert. So I rewired and tested again. All seemed well for the next 2 weeks. Over the past few days there would be intermittent times that the TV speaker sound (coming from STRDG720) would just stop randomly and not recover ( despite amp settings verified as AMP + TV) would unplug and reconnect the HDMI cables and sound would recover until the next random episode of cutting out. This became more and more frequent, and then we started losing DVD video intermittently and would get a modulation message on the 720's display. We would be without both video and audio for 5-30 seconds then the display would return to DVD and the movie (picture and sound) would return. Spent 2 hours chatting with Sony support on-line, and once the tech asked me to read the manual to him I realized that I was wasting my time. Amazon has been great on the return, and will purchase another AV receiver from them soon, probably the Onkyo 606 that I talked myself out of in the first place. Perhaps my problems were operator error, but I think I got a bad unit and don't have the patience to try again. Will move up a notch with my repurchase. Thanks to Amazon for making the purchase and return simple. Will continue with future purchases from Amazon, but will consider Sony with caution.
Digital camera Review: Disappointing product Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this receiver and after two weeks of use it went haywire. It stopped sending the video signal to my new samsung 50" plasma tv, and the sound went out too. The picture would come in for a half a second, and then go out for three seconds. When I bypassed the receiver and went right from the cable box to my tv, the signal and tv worked fine. For the two weeks it did work the sound was just ok, I would say it was less 'full' than my 5 yr old yamaha that it replaced (I wanted to go all hdmi so I bought the new receiver). It just sounded a little hollow. If it hadn't broken I wouldn't have replaced it due to the sound, but it didn't sound as good as I had hoped. I mailed it back to Amazon yesterday and I have already purchased a Yamaha 663 on another web retailer as it was $110 less than on Amazon. Now I have to spend all that time hooking everything up again!
Other issue I ran into was whenever I watched a blu ray movie on my new PS3 I couldn't adjust the sound settings on the receiver, the PS3 just took over. I didn't know that would happen. (I'm not a real audiophile, not an expert on this stuff)
Digital camera Review: Do not buy this product Summary: 1 Stars
Right out of the box the HDMI pass-thru didn't work.
Not many places to get it repaired (and I live in LA). Ridiculously expensive to ship to get it repaired.
Speaker selection has A or B but not A and B. Remote does not control speaker selection.
I have given up on Sony products.
Junk Junk Junk
Digital camera Review: EXCELLENT UNIT Summary: 5 Stars
All I have to say is excellent unit for the price. Been looking for a long time for a 7.1 receiver. The prices were out of my reach. Fortunately this unit was well in my reach and it being a SONY unit is a extra plus. I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a 7.1 unit.
