Digital camera reviews of Sony STRDG720 7.1 Audio Video Receiver - BlackDigital camera Review: For the price, worth it. Summary: 3 Stars
I bought the Sony STR DG720 because I noticed that there was a sweet deal on an Onkyo 7.1 speaker set that I was really interested in. At the time, I had been using my Panasonic's TV speakers for sound for my movies and video games and had always been unsatisfied.
I chose the receiver based on the low price, inclusion of HDMI inputs (for DVD Player and Xbox 360), and the fact that it was 7.1 compatible.
I figured I'd upgrade eventually, but I would be satisfied enough with the receiver until I could get the funds to upgrade my system.
Satisfied is the best way to describe my relationship with the machine. It does the things that I want it to (send sound to my speakers and video to my TV). The box itself does not feel well-built, the front panel looks dated and programming the machine is a tremendous hassle. The remote is awful, thank god for Harmony remotes. The sound quality is a drop from the previous Onkyo amp that I was using to play music with, but I figured that would be the case as I was not looking for a high-end machine. The lack of upconverting is a minor annoyance, but I knew about it going in.
The pluses to the machine are the price, satisfying sound and volume for a smallish living room, and decent amounts of inputs.
One can't go wrong with the system at this price level. It's competition is easily 1-2 hundred more, which in a bind can be the decision making factor. I'll be sticking with the system for a while, my next purchase being better speaker wire, hoping that that makes enough of a difference to persuade me not to buy the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K just yet.
Digital camera Review: Good Buy Good features Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this receiver for 5 days and I'm very happy. The menu system allows very good control over all functions. The ability to hookup and arrange speakers is very flexible. I'm using this with a Comcast digital cable box. The box I started with did not have an HDMI connection, only RGB cables. This combination would not work correctly when my Sony Brava was connected with HDMI; in various combination I could get sound or picture but not both. I had to get a HDMI cable box to make this work. The Brava sync feature mostly work well. If I turn on the TV, the receiver comes on and turns off when the TV is turned off. My Sony DVD player will switch the receiver correctly as well. It can be awkward switching back to TV from DVD.
My only complaint is the manual is simplistic and leave you wondering about how things work.
I think you get a lot of bang for the buck with this product
Digital camera Review: Good Receiver for the Price Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this as a gift for a friend who was just entering the home theater world. As long as you understand that this is Sony's entry level product, you will not be dissapointed. Easy to set up and the sound is good. I was dissappointed that volume control was not shown on the TV screen, but you get what you pay for.
Digital camera Review: Good Stereo, HORRIBLE remote function Summary: 3 Stars
I got this receiver as a secondary receiver to be used in the basement to replace an old sony. For the price it has a nice array of inputs/outputs and sounds good.
The bad: The remote function for the stereo is nearly unusable. The remote has to be used pretty much directly straight in front of the receiver, with absolutely no obstructions at all or it simply will not work. Even the range of the remote is bad. Being slightly offcenter to the stereo will not allow the remote to work. I replaced the standard remote with a universal harmony and it's slightly better, but it's by no means good. This may have something to do with the RF reader on the receiver as opposed to the actual remote? Whatever it is, it's very annoying. I would not recommend this to my friends. I wish I would have spent a little more.
Digital camera Review: Good System For Blu-ray or PS3 Summary: 5 Stars
If you want a basic system that works well with other Sony components this is a good choice.
I even have a media port set up for my Apple iPod.
