We are not on the cutting edge of the latest in sound systems, but this one works for us. My only problem is the volume variation from HD to standard digital. Some stations vary in volume as well. I got this product one week ago. I'm using it with Yamaha SP1800 5.1 speaker system. I got both from www.jr.com ($360 for both, including shipping, both new).
I ended up expending less than $400 including the cables, and wire molding.
This is agreat product, and the main thing is that it will send your HDMI 'sound' to your speakers instead of doing a 'pass-trhu' (like the other receivers on the price range). the downside is that you need to pass the cables for each of your input type (HDMI,RCA,Composite). But again, you won't be able to get that for less than $400 / $450 (only for the receiver, of course new).
The sound is great, for those who are new to Home theather systems (like me). It's a great start; and i think that I will stick on this receiver for a while.
I highly recommend you to get a universal remote (I have the Harmony 720); which I love :).
I haven't configured any of the 'advanced' settings; but so far It's great what I have used.

I bought the Sony STR-DG720 for the 3 HDMI inputs. They work great, and are easy to setup.
Everything else is a pain in the neck. The remote, menus, and instruction manual are all difficult to understand and navigate.
My HDMI inputs are:
- Tivo HD player
- DVD player
My HDMI output is:
- Home Theater projector
The sound comes out of speakers or headphones.
This works well for me, and was fairly simple to setup.

We wanted a new receiver to replace a 10 year old one in our bedroom. This one was the perfect price/feature balance for what we needed. We don't have a lot of things to hookup, so the number of ports/connections was not as critical for us. For a larger home theater system, it would be prudent to check it has everything you may need. Also, while it is 'XM ready', you need to buy some type of satellite receiver for it to work, which we have not yet done. All in all, we are very happy with this purchase - just the good quality basics at a good price.
