Digital camera reviews of Sony STRDG720 7.1 Audio Video Receiver - BlackDigital camera Review: HDMI Issues Summary: 3 Stars
I like the stereo but I bought it for the HDMI switch. I hooked up the DVD player it didn't work I hooked up my computer no good. The only thing that did work was the satellite. If your buying this thing for the HDMI switch buy another unit.
Digital camera Review: Highly Recommend Summary: 4 Stars
This was the first receiver I have ever purchased. I read lots of reviews and chose this one because I could get the switching functions via HDMI that I wanted without the high price. I did not need up converting because my PS3 does that decoding stuff. My comcast dvr also sends the signal so no up converting needed. I am a novice and I wanted a receiver that was not confusing to set up. I read that this one was fairly simple and it was. I wanted surround sound for my PS3 for Guitar Hero purposes. And I have my comcast HD DVR running through it as well. Simple 2 hdmi inputs and one output to tv all via hdmi. I'm not even using the 3rd input. Easy switching and great sound. Blu rays on ps3 are great. Guitar hero cranked up load is great. I was a little surprised the max volume wasn't a little louder, but it is still PLENTY loud. I would recommend not skimping on speakers. I would make sure you get 100 plus watt 8ohm speakers using 12 or 14 gauge speaker wire. Go to home depot for the wire. Also I think subwoofer should be a minimum of 8 inch 230 watt and be powered. Don't get an unpowered sub. I got this product for around $240. You don't need to spend a large amount for a quality AV receiver.
Digital camera Review: Labeling Summary: 4 Stars
It would have been nice if you could lable the inputs. I have HDMI for my cable and composite video for my DVD. I had to use SAT as my DVD. Seems like everything else lets you label the input yourself (including Sony TV's).
Digital camera Review: Lame front look and but works great. Summary: 5 Stars
I liked the look of the Onkyo's and Harmon Kardon's, but for price and function, this receiver works great. It's easy to install and easy to set up, for me anywayz. Navigating the menu's was hard at first but only because it's unfamiliar. After having it for a few weeks now, i'm all good menu's and functions. would definetly recommend for beginner systems and for how inexpensive it is. Dont spend the extra 150-300 dollars on more expensive receivers.
Digital camera Review: Look out for COX Cable Summary: 5 Stars
I got the receiver a week or so ago and it is great, especially considering the price. It sounds great and most setup is automatic. It works great with PS3/HDMI. HDMI is required for the PS3 to output more than 2 audio channels from a Blu-Ray Disk (Standard DVDs on the PS3 reproduce Dolby 5.1 just fine.)
HOWEVER, beware of COX cable if you want to use HDMI from the cable box. You will get an error on your TV about it not supporting HDCP, which is a copy protection scheme. Cox (Scientific Atlanta) DVR boxes see any HDMI switching receiver as some sort of pirating device and requires you to use component cables. This is a major inconvenience! The result is that you can't switch from the COX box to the PS3 without changing inputs on your TV.
A call to COX customer "care" revealed that they don't care to remove HDCP from their cable boxes even though I suspect it would be a simple ROM upgrade.
