The VCT-80AV enhances the features of my Sony camcorder as it is very user-freindly and intuitive in its design. The system allows me to concentrate on filming my subject and less time on figuring out the locations of the buttons I need to press. The panning and tiling is very smooth and allows easy following of very active grandchildren and pets with no jerking motion. I have bought a number of other Sony remote control tripods over the years from the consumer through the bigger pro versions.
Yesterday I used my new VCT-80AV on a wedding shoot and discovered that the zoom in and out is set up the opposite way from all of our other Sony remote control tripods.
Why on earth would Sony do this? The others are set up so that when you pull toward you, the image zooms in. This one is the other way around. I was constantly zooming in when I want to zoom out. It was a nightmare.
It would be like if a BMW decided to switch the brake and the gas pedals from one BMW model to the next. If you owned one of each, you'd probably kill someone accidentally. Come on Sony, pay attention!
Otherwise, it's a good tripod. I like the black legs, the controls. It could use a padded carrying case rather than the basic one it comes with.

I've been looking for a video tripod with a fluid head that was also reasonably priced. I wasn't having much luck with that! After purchasing a new Sony camcorder and reviewing accessories, I noticed this tripod. I was apprehensive as there were some remarks about the head not being very fluid. I received the tripod today and opened up the package right away to check it and I'm VERY pleased with the movement in all directions. I've finally found the tripod I've been looking for. This tripod is very handy. I filmed 2 weddings. One without the tripod and one with and the footage is a world of difference. I love the remote. At first a was weary of using it but with the camera mounted on the tripod it really would be hard to control without. The remote is simple and easy to understand. If you are serious about your camera get a serious tripod.
While it might be more spendy then most other tripods it does stand out above the rest. It is very lite and easy to unfold.
The bag that it comes with is rather cheap, but it will do the job. Tripod seems to be of good construction.
