Digital camera Review: Can't dub AVCHD to dual layer disks - crazy!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a nice unit and it works fine for copying over Firewire and USB for SD video. If also copies AVCHD (hi-def) video/audio via USB, but there is a big limitation. It will not copy AVCHD to dual-layer disks. Big problem because AVCHD takes up lots of space (a 120 G hard drive holds about 15 h of it), so you can see that a single layer DVD holds not a lot. If the proportions hold up, that means about 30 minutes for a single layer DVD. A dual layer would hold 2X that...much better!

Funny part is that Sony lets you record from the other inputs to dual layer disks, but the only way to record AVCHD is through the USB input. So the format that REALLY needs the dual layer disk, cannot use it.

Dumb.

Otherwise, a nice recorder. Even stylish.

Warning: this review is coming from someone who requires someone else to set up anything electronic...The manual was a bit confusing. It intimidated me so much that I actually left the recorder alone for a couple of weeks thinking I should just return it. The trick was to put in the blank recordable DVD and once that's in place the prompts were self explanatory. Once I figured out how to work it, it was a breeze. I only wasted 2 DVD's and now I'm in hog-heaven transferring all my 8mm tapes to DVD. Took just a bit of digging to figure out to set the recording to "SP" and that I was suppose to set it to VIDEO to DVD recording. Those were the only things I had to SET UP. Plugging the connectors in the back was a breeze. VIDEO OUT on the video player and VIDEO IN on the recorder. Quality was good. Someone told me if I used the "S" connection the quality of the picture would be better but I don't have one so I just used what I had. For the purpose I bought this recorder for it was a pretty good deal and it's small enough I can put it away in a drawer.

Digital camera Review: Could This Be Any Easier?

I have a JVC Mini DV Camcorder which uses mini dv tapes. I received my Sony VRDMC5 DVDirect DVD Recorder yesterday from Amazon, after unpacking it and reading the Sony Quick Start Guide, I hooked up the recorder and turned it on, went through the onscreen menu on the recorder, made my selections, then hooked up my JVC Camcorder to the recorder, (the Sony Manual tells you if you have another brand of camcorder other than a Sony what hook up it will accept, all of the accepted hookups came with my camera) I then pushed play on my camcorder, pushed the record button on the Sony recorder and 'Walah', a beautiful recorded DVD. When you push the eject button on the recorder it lets you know if you have any remaining time on the dvd to record on and then asks you if you want to finalize the dvd and reminds you that you will not be able to make changes after that. It plays on my computer, and different dvd players throughout our house with a beautiful picture and wonderful sound. This was my Anniversary present that I picked out myself and I am so happy that I now have a way of permanentaly keeping all the wonderful memories I have recorded on those little mini dv tapes and also with the ease of use of the Sony VRDMC5 DVDirect DVD Recorder.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1P7RA88N078WG I filmed my friend recording one of his camcorder tapes to dvd+r with this new Sony on Youtube - couldn't put the video review on Amazon as it was too large.

I would recommend this - I don't know how to record from cams (Bill goes thru it pretty well in this vid) as I'm been using it to be able to discard my videos

Of course the quality of the dvd is limited by the quality of the video or camcorder tape - but this is still good as it doesn't need a computer to use

The only thing I've had a problem with was learning you could change the dvd recording speed - I was using HQ dvd record mode and was limited to an hour to fill up a disc until changing the recording speed to SP (2 hours) or SLP (4 hours) for the dvd record speed

Not sure how that affects dvd quality - I'm still checking it out. Right now - would give it a recommend

Digital camera Review: WORKS AS ADVERTISED

If you're like me and have a pile of old VHS tapes you downloaded from your camcorder or TV this item will copy them beautifully and simply. It does what it says it will very well. I'm very pleased to have great DVD's now in place of deteriorating old VHS tapes. I use it often and it never fails to deliver.
