Digital camera reviews of Sony VRDMC5 DVDirect DVD RecorderDigital camera Review: Awesome little device! Summary: 4 StarsWith some of the newer Camcorders on the market, many do not come with a mic input these days. In addition, many don't come with a "hot shoe" so to speak for camera light attachment, but rather a cold shoe where an accessory can be added on. Most of the time this is not a problem for me. However, when recording some events for my work, the audio just doesn't do it. Especially when the PA sound gets recorded as an echo because of where I am able to place the camera.
This device totally solved that problem with exceptional quality. I was able to record the video output from a Sony Camcorder and feed in the audio from the sound board at the event. The result was improved sound quality from what would otherwise be a okay one and no need to transfer from the camcorder at a later time. This eliminated an extra step from my already busy schedule. When I worried about whether the device was getting the signal, the preview screen showed me in real time what video was being fed into the recorder. The only drawback that I have to speak of for this item is its limitation in connecting with a computer directly. Otherwise it is in my opinion a flawless device. The 16:9 support is definitely a step up from many of its earlier predecessors.
Digital camera Review: Nice performer, tiny bug. Summary: 4 StarsThis is a very capable versatile DVD Burner. I like the choice of 5 recording speeds and the clear "viewer" for monitoring or previewing the material you just burned. A slight bug was detected. If you ever try to burn material or TV channel that is copy protected, the burner will show you an error message "waiting for input source" and will not burn any other source afterwards....until you Power the burner OFF and back ON. I reported it to Sony. Otherwise it's a nifty unit.
Digital camera Review: Experimenting with Canon camcorder HF-10 Summary: 4 StarsI purchased this DVD recorder with the main purpose of archiving my dozens of VHS tapes onto DVDs...which it does great! I also have a Canon HD camcorder model HF-10. I did not buy the Canon DVD recorder that is recommended for the HF-10 because it did not seem as versatile or able to connect to a VHS player.
The Sony VRDMC5 works very good with inputs from my VHS players via a yellow video and audio red/white cable. Very user friendly. I have not tried the S-cable connection yet. The Sony VRDMC5 will also record directly from my Canon HF-10 camera by using the Canon "AV Out" (yellow video; red and white audio cable). However, I could not get the Sony VDRMC5 to read SDHC cards produced from my Canon HF-10 (Sony manual states that it will read SDHC cards of size 4GB or smaller). Of course, Sony makes no claims regarding compability with other brands. In fact, I could not get the Sony VDRMC5 to read any type of files (.avi; .jpeg-4 or .wmv) that I copied onto the SDHC cards. I am still experimenting.
And, as others have noted in reviews, the Sony USB port will not read an input from my computer, portable flash drive or my Canon HF-10 camcorder. The Sony did read, copy and burn still digital pictures from my Canon PowerShot digital camera model A720IS SD 2GB card onto DVD.

Digital camera Review: Sony VRDMC5 DVDirect DVD Recorder Summary: 4 StarsFirst I want to say that this is just a preliminary review so that is why I only gave it 4 stars. I just received this unit the other day and so far I am impressed. After I opened it up and got the unit out of the box I wanted to use it. I never opened the directions or the quick user guides and was up burning a DVD in less than 5 minutes. I am up to date on a lot of computer/electronics so some things may come a little easier to those individuals than others. But, I will say that so far it is very easy to use. After my DVD was complete and finalized I threw it into my DVD player and was very happy with the quality of the video. My camcorder is a Sony MiniDV not HD or anything high end. I do have a LCD HD Sony TV and the picture I was looking at was great. So far from what I have seen, I am glad that I purchased this unit. As long as I can update this review, I will as soon as I give the unit a good run through. Thanks for reading and I hope that it helps whoever reads it.
