Digital camera reviews of Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio TunerDigital camera Review: Does not store pre-set information. Summary: 2 Stars
Pre-set information is lost every time the power goes out. In Florida, this is every day in the summer and every other day in the winter. Very inconvenient and a major nuisance. However, I noticed a remarkable difference in sound when I tuned into the local classical music station. They were playing Stravinsky, picking up subtle sounds and nuances. The pre-set problem really bugs me, though. I have bought a Sangean since because of the pre-set problem and it is worth the extra money. I truly enjoy my HD tuner, though I only listen to the NPR channel. It's enough! This tuner, however, is not recommended.
Digital camera Review: Don't bother! Summary: 1 Stars
The Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner does not come with the required batteries for the remote or the RCA audio cables needed to connect it to the sound system.
When I finally did connect the tuner, I discovered that the reception for the radio station I wanted to listen to (KSJN-FM Minneapolis) was vastly inferior to the reception on my old tuner.
Save your money and don't buy this product.
Digital camera Review: Dust In the Wind Summary: 2 Stars
My Sony XDRF1HD worked fairly well for about eight months before it suddenly developed a loud hum. I sent it to the Sony repair center in Laredo, TX and after not hearing anything for three weeks tried calling them for information. Getting through to Laredo was not straightforward, but eventually I reached someone who found the work order information; he told me that since the unit could not be repaired due to lack of parts, that replacement units were unavailable since the product is discontinued, and that a comparable model was unavailable, they were processing a refund that would come in four weeks. Since this is a Sony product I find all of this disappointing. I've been without HD radio for nearly a month and at this point I need to find another brand.
While it worked the XDRF1HD was fairly good at receiving HD stations from as far away as 100 miles (connected to a rooftop TV antenna), but quite often signals would drop out or not be available. As with digital TV, you either get a clear signal or you don't get anything. The tuning setup is clunky in my opinion and the unit didn't remember the station presets after power outages. Aesthetically speaking, I didn't like the brightly lit dial; the dial makes the unit look more like a car radio than an AV component.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Summary: 5 Stars
This is a super sensitive receiver. It has enabled me to pick up all FM stations that I could not previously pick up. Also it will pick up FM & AM HD stations.
Digital camera Review: Excellent HD radio tuner Summary: 5 Stars
The Sony XDR-F1HD AM-FM HD tuner has exceeded my expections in all ways. It replaced a much larger and totally unsatisfactory Insignia tuner and displays far better audio quality and ability to receive difficult HD stations. Its analog FM performance on distant stations is even better than the tuner in my A/V receiver. The Sony was easy to set up and has plenty of presets. Although its dial display is lit when the unit is off, the brightness is directly controlled by the remote, a nice touch. This tuner performes far above its price level.
