Digital camera reviews of Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio TunerDigital camera Review: Excellent Tuner - Poor Screen Summary: 4 Stars
This tuner is easy to set up and operate. It locks onto HD signals much faster than my other HD radio. The FM HD stations are clear, with sound quality in some ways noticeably improved over standard FM (which I did not expect). While the sound is deep and punchy, there is a mild indistinct quality that I normally associate with audio compression. I can pick up two AM HD stations and the sound is great; HD does wonderful things for AM sound.
Problems:
- The display has a bright backlight, but the LCD is not made for easy viewing from a distance. It's not bad, but it's not a component-quality display.
- The display backlight does not dim when the unit is turned off. This is irritating mainly because EVERY other component I have ever owned does this.
- For some reason my Harmony remote can't power this component on or off properly. This is probably Logitech's problem rather than Sony's.
I don't have the guts to unplug the unit and risk losing all my carefully found presets. My other Sony HD radio doesn't remember its presets, but I had hoped Sony had fixed that in this model. I will update this review after my next power outage.
The unit does heat up a bit, which is a little concerning for longevity.
All in all, a very nice component.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Tuner! Summary: 5 Stars
I was a bit skeptical about buying this after reading some reviews from other people local to me that said they had reception issues with this tuner. But, I had read so many other good reviews I decided to try it for myself.
Bottom line - I love it!
It was extremely simple to hook up. I had a few reception issues right out of the box and placing it close to the floor. Once I picked it up about 3 - 4 feet off the ground it worked much better. Then I realized it came with an AM and FM Antenna in the box. I don't listen to AM, so I only plugged in the FM Antenna and located the wires behind my cabinet about 6 ft off the ground and - PRESTO - I started receiving many stations I could not receive before.
Easy to program the presets and clock display with just the punch of 2 buttons. Comes with a nice little compact remote. Definitely worth the price and highly recommended.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Tuner! Summary: 5 Stars
HD (hybrid digital) radio is not yet available for this area, so I can only comment on the analog performance of the XDRF1HD. That has been spectacular. The selectivity and sensitivity are as fine as I expected, after reading Brian Beezley's thorough technical review. To get the full benefit of the tuner's features, an outdoor or attic antenna is essential. If the enclosed folded dipole is used and positioned close to the tuner, it may pick up a little of its own noise. All in all, I'm delighted with the radio and would certainly buy it again.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Upgrade on Tuner Summary: 5 Stars
I use this at work, and has really enhanced my listening. Several of my favorite stations were not strong enough in analog, but pulls in very well with digital. One annoying trait, when signal is weak, it just cuts out in digital, unlike in analog, you just receive a more signal that degrades with static.
Digital camera Review: Excellent addition to my sound system Summary: 4 Stars
Added this to my component sound system in order to receive a particular station in my area. It is doing an excellent job. My particular system is in a rather dark area and it would be a help if the top buttons were lighted this isn't a serious issue.
