Digital camera reviews of Super Talent 64 GB USB 2.0 Luxio with Encription High Speed STP64GLXSU(Silver)Digital camera Review: Portable Encrypted Data Summary: 4 StarsI had two requirements when I bought this drive. First, I needed the large capacity USB drive, and second, I needed a drive that provided automatic (transparent) encryption that would be difficult for anyone other than a Nation State with plenty or resources to crack. This drive meets both requirements.
PROS:
1. This device has a large 64 GB capacity, packed into a 1 oz flash drive.
2. The unit uses hardware based, AES 256 encryption allowing faster operation than S/W based encryption, and it frees the CPU to do other things while encryption takes place.
3. The design is based on a dual-channel architecture, resulting in greater speed than single channel devices provide.
4. Despite its large capacity, the device is ultra thin, allowing it to fit easily within in the space provided for a USB device without preventing other USB devices from sitting beside it.
5. The unit secures an entire drive, rather than just a file on the drive. This prevents people from simply copying the secure file and working on cracking it at their leisure.
6. A protective leather storage case is provided with a claw clasp to attach to a key. This can prevent scratching while in a pocket or purse.
7. The device is waterproof to the extent that you can drop it in a bathtub and not damage it, but I wouldn't leave it there for a few hours. I suspect that probable exposure time is about 1 hour before failure, but that's a guess.
8. The owner can use the device in either a secure mode, or as an unsecured device. To leave it unsecured, leave the password blank.
9. A life-time warrantee is provided by the manufacturer. Where can you find that kind of warrantee these days!
CONS:
1. There is no way to secure the cap to the back of the device, making loss of the cap an almost certainty.
2. No neck/wrist strap/lanyard is provided, though a small slot is provided at the base of the unit to attach a strap.
3. The device requires an unsecured partition with a minimum size of 9.8 MB. I understand the need for two partitions. What I don't understand is why I must give up so much space on the unsecure partition, because only 3 megs are being used for support software. That means that 7 megs are unsecured for no reason other than manufacturer's choice. If the operating system will not support smaller partitions, then obviously that should not count against manufacturer.
4. The software that sets the password allows a password of 1 character, rather than enforcing a minimum length for a secure password. I know that security must be the responsibility of the user, but people can be lazy. When minimum standards can be applied automatically, they should be. This is, after all, intended to be a secure device.
5. The Password for the encrypted partition is limited to a maximum of 16 characters. Since longer is better, I would prefer the ability to use a password of at least 25 characters. Still, 16 is better than 8.
6. The included leather case has a claw clasp to attach a key to the unit. However, the leather loop that attaches the clasp to the case looks like it could tear loose if pulled too hard. This might result in loss of the device.
Some people have said the device is slow when writing. I don't think that is fair. Yes it will take longer to load the unit up with 20 gig of data spread across 25,000 files than it would to simply transfer that same data to another harddisk, but let's be honest -- how many times do you copy more than one or two files at a time. Not many I'll wager, so in practice, you won't see any real significant difference in transfer time. Also remember that encryption of data takes time that other drives don't have to spend. Want it faster, don't use the encryption feature.
This unit has a good feel to it, and it is attractive. It is not the most secure device on the market, but it will satisfy the needs of most people who have a need for portable data security, and at the time of this writing, it's price per secured byte of information is unmatched anywhere. [...].
