I was quite interested in the D-Link offerings based on features/price. However, the reliability of the d-link HW scared me. If I'm going to invest in a 2-bay mirrored NAS, reliability is important, right? If you have a general understanding of a NAS then it really doesn't get any better for a consumer. The interface is clean, the features you'd hope to have are there. permissions, S.m.a.r.t. status, ability to backup TO a usb drive for offsite backups, journaled (ext3) fs., sleeps the drives when idle, works as a print server, good xfer speeds for what it is. This is an expensive piece of hardware. No regrets.
It is also compatible with apple's time machine s/w., something that they don't advertise, and it may be the only non-apple product I saw that will do this.
Also supports itunes media server, if you want it to.
Doesn't do internal defrag, unless I've missed it.
When you install it, it needs to have its OS loaded onto one of the drives that you install. So there is a little bit of setup to it, but nothing overly complicated.... follow the manual, download the software, follow the manual...
USB print server works great, tho it seems you must use the "assistnat" software from synology to create the printer on a windows system. can;'t just add printer and point to the ip\path. haven't tried for mac yet.
For someone looking for a reliable, hands-off small office or home NAS, this is fine. Extremely happy with this unit.
