Digital camera reviews of Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II LD SP Aspherical (IF) Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras

Digital camera Review: Best lens, under $500 for Canon DLSR
Summary: 5 Stars

I really wanted the Canon 17-55 USM IS f/2.8 lens. But that lens costs $1000. So, after a lot of research decided on this lens. It is a great lens for the price. I would strongly recommend it. It gives sharp images, and also, f/2.8 is great. The major difference between this and the Canon 17-55: The Canon has faster focus, and Image Stablization. Also, perhaps build-quality is possibly better, but the Tamron feels pretty solid.

If you can spend $1000 and have no other budget issues, get the Canon. Otherwise get the Tamron for $400ish, get a 430EX, and Canon 55-250 IS (or 70-300 IS). And you are good to go.

Digital camera Review: Best quality at that price
Summary: 5 Stars

I spent 2 days reviewing all possible lens in that range for my Canon Rebel.
The Canon 17-85 IS looks great and has good reviews also... but why pay for a f/4 lens with Image Stabilization when you can have a f/2.8 by Tamron for half the price?
Optical performance is just great and compares to the Canon consumer lenses (class L are better for sure). Auto focus may just be a bit noisy. But it is fast at that range and is really not a problem.
Good stuff, best price, and shipping by Amazon is reliable

Digital camera Review: Best thing I've bought for my Canon 7D
Summary: 5 Stars

This lens is a great value! I was reluctant at first, as it didn't have "Canon" name and I didn't know how would this lens perform on my Canon 7D, but boy, I've never spent my money better on any lens so far!

Facts:

- Sharp, sharp sharp! Amazing from 17-40, great on 50. For the money it's absolutely stunning! What's even better - it nicely uses 18mpix and brings on the detail!

- 17mm isn't really a 17mm... It's more like 16 or 16,5mm. That means - it's not a 28mm it's a 26mm field of view!

- Totally useful at f2.8. In fact, this lens is sharpest from f2.8 to f8, the best being f4 and f5.6. That means, go on and use that f2.8 freely in low light or to have a good bokeh, with NO penalty on the image quality! How cool is that?

- Auto-focus works great. It's fast and accurate. It finds the target promptly even in low light. Yes, it does produce little squeaky noise, but only if you make the "full turn" from infinity to the close-up. In reality, you'll rarely go that way.
I was concerned how would AF perform, since it wasn't a Canon AF lens, but it works brilliantly! Top accuracy.

- Construction - a sturdy plastic that is nowhere near cheap. And you also get a hood (a great deal and something Canon don't want to give for non-L glass! Boo to them!)

So, buy this lens, it's an amazing value for pro-quality glass! From what I've seen, image quality rivals MUCH MUCH more expensive Canon 17-55. I'd never buy that lens now that I know how great Tamron 17-50 is! It fits nicely on 7D and utilises every potential that camera gives. I'd easily rate it 10 stars if I could.

Digital camera Review: Best value but not as sharp as expected
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this lens for use with a Canon 40D. After reading the reviews here of how sharp it is, I decided to give it a try. I do believe I got a good copy and I didn't notice any issues with front focus, but my pictures weren't as sharp as I expected. The focus is fast although a bit noisy and the fast aperture is nice in low light. Its a nice indoor range for a cropped sensor. All in all its a best value, still I felt most of my pictures were lacking some contrast and sharpness. FWIW I shot in nothing but RAW on my Canon 40D, and could fix the contrast.

Ultimately I sent it back and am now looking to replace this range with canon "L" glass. There's no substitute for L, if you can save up a little extra do it. If you're on a budget then this lens will produce some great shots just not consistently.

Digital camera Review: Best value in the class
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first non-Canon lens purchase, and I'm extremely happy with my decision.

After lots of researches, online reviews, and the test drive at the NY PhotoPlus EXPO last year, I know this is the best walk around lens for my XT. The image is sharp even at the borders, and the color is beautiful. I would say the image quality looks the same as the result from my friend's Canon 17-40L. I'm confident to use any F stops at any zoom range while shooting.

The only complain is the auto focus noise, since it does not come with an ultrasonic motor. But the noise level is acceptable, better than the Canon 50mm f1.8 II, and most likely only happens in low light situation. The focus is fast even though without the USM, anyway.

It comes with a lens hood and Tamron USA 6 year warranty, which is something Canon should be improved.

Base on my research and test drive, only one lens in the same range out perform this Tamron 17-50 f2.8. It is the Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 USM IS. However, this new Canon lens cost more than thousand dollars, which is not something I can justify.

This lens has won the 2006/2007 EISA best consumer lens award. If you need a lens with first-class image quality, excellent performance, reasonable price, and best warranty, go for it.
