This pack was a great a couple of years ago. A friend has one and swears by it due to the abuse it has received.
That was then, as with all cost cutting options, manufacturing needs to stay competitive and any change can affect long term quality.
Comparing the two back packs is very reveling, even though I paid less than half the price from the original two (or less, he's not sure) year old model.
The zippers are now smaller and lighter (read lower quality). The phone/MP3 pocket is gone. The key clip is gone.
After the 1st weekend use, the clip for the flap broke. That's what forced me to compare the new version to the old. Now if the clip broke due to cold/freezing weather, eh, chalk it up to an act of god. The coldest the back got was 60 degrees, yet one of the clips broke on insertion.
Even my friend admitted the new model is not the same quality.
Could the new model be a grey market nock-off? Or is it a cost cutting manufacturing decision by Targus?
I really don't know.
I do know that Amazon really stands behind their after sales support, and returning products is almost too easy.
I planned on Mickey Mousing the flap clip after I tried to get a hold of Amazon CS. Found it easier to return the product.
It could be just a defective clip, but the clip on the newer model is much thinner than the original.
Of course, I must admit that $46 USD the bang for the buck is very good.
The lay out of this pack is perfect for 17"+ desktop portable (I can't call the HP DV7-2xxx a laptop with a straight face)
This pack could fit a 16.3" x 11.2" (sic) mobile PC that's housed in a Case Logic Pls-17Bk Laptop Sleeve (with PS & Mouse included in the zipped pocket).
Not to mention 2 homemade ghettoblaster speakers with slimline amp/converter.
Really needed this size pack, sure hope the Mobile Edge Premium backpack has the storage space.
Funny thing though, my friend is still considering getting this newer version for his kids.
He will wait for my Mobile Edge to base his decision on, so his loyalty to brand name is still not binding, which is a good thing. Ahh... choices, isn't life grand?

The bag is quite large, and can easily hold a 17 inch laptop, plus much much more. Seems like it's durable enough. The only downside is perhaps it weight, though I don't find that too much of a problem.
