Digital camera reviews of Targus XL Backpack Designed for 17 Inch Notebooks TXL617 (Black with Blue Accents)

Digital camera Review: Excellent Pack - Best one yet!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a Maistro (?) was it, the last couple packs. The straps broke within a year and the material flaked out on my stuff in the pack.

This Targus pack is the best pack yet!! And I've had a lot of packs. My bike is my main mode of travel and I use this pack every day. It's just as strong now as when I bought it about 6 months ago. The straps are strong, the material is tough (and looks good too. And no flaking on my stuff!!) I fully expect to have this pack for 10 years no problem. The zippers are good too. If you carry a lot of stuff, this is the pack for you. My experience with Targus is "good quality"!

Digital camera Review: Excellent Product

I use the backpack to carry my laptop and tax materials for volunteer work and the backpack has been excellent. It has sufficient pockets and has held up for my use.

Digital camera Review: Excellent Product, Very Pleased
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this bag for medical school, anticipating that I would be carrying a TON of books, binders, clothes, food, and coffee on a daily basis. I decided to purchase this bag instead of comparable products made by Swissgear mainly due to what I perceived to be an increased utility of this bag, mostly due to its size.

I have owned this bag over 2 months and am VERY pleased with my purchase. The first thing we should get out of the way is it lacks some of the structural flair of the Swissgear bags in the sense that some of the materials come off as being cheaper and there aren't any cool cable loopy things that go through the grab handle. That aside the bag is very solid and shows no signs of wear after the period I have owned it. And it doesn't feel cheap, just not as "cool" as the swissgear.

Some users complained that its too big which is just ridiculous. I wanted a big bag but this one does not feel overly big when it is underfilled. You can easily fit it into small lockers provided it isnt packed out. Unless your very anemic it isnt going to look ridiculous on you either.

More than one user complained that targus does not adequately address rainy weather, with the open flap pocket and lack of zipper flaps. The bag does lack zipper flaps but I have walked through at least three rainstorms for about 15 minutes per walk wearing this bag. My hair was completely soaked but my laptop and other items were COMPLETELY DRY. Not Damp, bone dry. One guy commented that the open flap will allow water in...well...duh, its open. You don't put your laptop in the open flap, you put your dirty gym clothes there. The front closed compartment is great for holding your mouse, powercord, and other paraphenalia.

Also, people complained about the laptop area not having enough padding which is ridiculous as well. It is very well padded and indeed I have dropped/thrown my bag several times without any damage to my laptop.

As you probably can gather from the pictures this bag can hold ALOT of stuff, and I have found it to be very comfortable when maxed out. I have a big frame and the straps do not in any way cut into my shoulders. I carry this bag at a weight of about 30lbs about 40min per day walking between my apartment and medical school and have experienced no discomfort at all. I also took the bag on a couple 3 day trips to various places on weekends and was able to fit the clothes I needed, toiletries, and of course my laptop. It was loaded to approx. 50 pounds). I have never been able to do this with another backpack (except for my italian military field pack which is absolutely HUGE).

All in all this is a

Digital camera Review: Excellent backpack for large screen laptops
Summary: 5 Stars

This Targus XL is a nice, solid bag. An Acer laptop with a 17.5" 16:9 widescreen fits into it very easily. Even though it's advertised as being for a 17" notebook, it could probably handle an 18.5" with no problems. In addition to being able to hold the laptop, it has a very large zippered pocket with kind of a file divider in it that is large enough to handle several text books. Of course, it also has a ton of smaller pockets for all your odds and ends.

I've had mine for only four days. I already managed to spill hot coffee directly onto the zipper for the section that holds my laptop. It protected my laptop very well, and the coffee didn't stain it at all.

If you need to transport and protect a large screen laptop, and you want to be able to carry other gear at the same time, this backpack is perfect.

Digital camera Review: Excellent bag for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

My messenger bag finally wore out after several years of use. I decided that I wanted to go with a backpack with broad straps because of a shoulder problem I had developed, partly as a result of using a bag that put undue stress on one shoulder while none at all on the other. And since buying the previous bag I had obtained an 18.5" laptop. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to find a bag large enough to carry a laptop that large suitable for everyday use. Does this one? Not quite. I can with difficulty get my laptop in the bag, but only barely. Even as it is, this is a huge backpack. Well not by hiking-through-the-Adirondacks standards, but by commuting to the office ones it is gargantuan.

There are essentially three large storage areas in the bag, along with several small ones. The one in the back, in which the laptop fits, can easily accommodate both the laptop and any accessories you would like to take along. You could easily fit a keyboard, media drive, external DVD player, and much more into it. The next storage space is even larger. The third area is a bit smaller, good for holding files and papers and a couple of books.

One complaint I have with the bag is that there isn't a good place to put the book I read during my commute. Most bags have an easy access place to drop your book into and then get back into when needed. This one doesn't. There is a massive amount of space, but none of it is good for quick access to a book. This might not be an important feature to everyone, but it is for me.

There are a lot of little spaces in the bag that are useful for various odds and ends. There is the standard beverage compartment. There is a space for either an iPod or cell phone, which I frankly find useless. There is a useful outer space into which I put pens and various odds and ends. If there was just a space to pop that book it would be close to perfect.

WARNING! There is one very serious flaw with this bag, one that could potentially lead to a disaster. If you really pack the bag full, the zippers for the two large spaces can open up on their own. I've started the habit of taking a few paper clips with me. If the bag is especially full, I take one of the paper clips and slide it from one of the zipper tabs to the other. Frankly, the bag should have been designed a bit better so that this wouldn't be necessary. It is the reason I don't give this five stars. The bag has popped open three times on me in less than a month.

All in all, I'm very happy with this bag. It is huge, well made, and was a bargain for the cost. If not for the problem with the bag popping open I'd love it.
