Digital camera reviews of Texas Instruments TI-89 Titanium Graphing Calculator

Digital camera Review: 5 star wonder
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow. This can do any calculus you throw at it: limits, derivitives etc. This is freakishly smart and can do problems faster than any human. I highly encourage you to get it.

Digital camera Review: A (very useful) niche item
Summary: 5 Stars

For pre-calculus and first-year calculus classes, this calculator is *probably* overkill and could even end up detracting from your understanding of the material, if you are using it instead of learning to do the integration and derivatives.

For higher level classes, however (Multivariable calculus, Differential equations, quantum physics) I would definitely recommend the Ti-89. For math classes, where the main part of the problem consists in *constructing* an integral rather than solving it, it's great to be able to check things quickly so that you don't go through unnecessary work solving an integral that wasn't right in the first place. For some of my science classes (quantum physics) this calculator has been indispensable.

There are other comparable calculators out there, but if you aren't familiar with those options, the Ti-89 is the safest bet, and you can be fairly sure it's what most other students will be using. The learning curve isn't going to be perfectly smooth for most people, but it's much easier to find someone who can explain a particular feature if you're not the only one in the class using that type of calculator. In summary, thanks to the Ti-89's fairly full feature set and prominence in academia, I definitely recommend this calculator.

Digital camera Review: A Beast.
Summary: 5 Stars

Quite simply, this calc. is a god-send. The TI-83 finally kicked the proverbial bucket, and the time had come to upgrade. What better choice than to go with than the 89? It does everything that is needed for the serious student of the sciences, and while it's geared towards the more technical degrees (EE's, ME's and physics), it has the ability to be any budding mathematicians dream. Texas Instruments, I applaud you.

Digital camera Review: A Convert
Summary: 4 Stars

After years of appreciating the well designed TI-83, I was sorry to sell mine and buy a TI-89 for calculus. After turning on the TI-89 Titanium I was even more sorry: it was very complicated at first, the learning curve is very steep.

Once you spend some time with this calculator and discover how powerful it is, you start to appreciate how much it can do. This is a remarkable machine, and once you get comfortable with the interface (which is pretty cool once you get used to it) the TI-89 becomes an indispensable tool. A remarkable machine, with vast capabilities.

I've also enjoyed the interface with my Apple iMac G5 Desktop with 17" M9843LL/A (1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive). The software works perfectly, and makes working with this calculator very pleasant.

If, when I was still in high school, someone told me I would ever have something this powerful in the palm of my hand, I could never have believed them. Worth the price.

Digital camera Review: A Must For the Engineer!
Summary: 5 Stars

The question becomes as simple as: do you expect to take higher level calculus, linear modeling/algebra, differential equations and/or electric circuits? If the answer is yes, you want to buy this calculator. I initially purchased the Casico 750 (a bit better than the TI 83) and now I find myself (in the middle of my second year of my engineering degree) finally breaking down to buy the TI 89 instead. Other reviews point to why this calculator stands out from the rest, all I wish to add is: avoid purchasing something cheaper for the engineer, you may only regret it later (like I did).
