Digital camera reviews of TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder

Digital camera Review: Brand new TiVo was DOA (Dead on Arrival)
Summary: 1 Stars

I received this item from Amazon, unpacked it and plugged it in. The result was the the item would not even power on. I would have returned the unit to Amazon but I called TiVo and they mistakenly told me to return it to them. Unfortunately, I received a refurbished unit in return. This was not Amazon's fault, but the fact that the first unit received from them did not even power on is the reason for the low rating.

Digital camera Review: Bugs have been fixed
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had my Series 3 for over one month now. I was hesitant to buy it at first due to the previous reviews noting limited functionality (TiVo To Go, etc.), but, noting the age of the other reviews (from 2006), I did some more research. I found newer articles (from late 2007, early 2008) stating that the problems have been resolved, so I decided to evaluate it during the 30-day trial period. And they really have been resolved :)

All of the bugs mentioned in other reviews have been fixed, including TiVo To Go and all the other features you don't get with your cable company. However, I should qualify this by saying that, with digital programming, sometimes the company puts "blocks" that prevent you from transferring the recording; that's an anti pirating problem sweeping throughout the entertainment industry, and not a TiVo problem. When TiVo obeys the law by stopping you from transferring something to your hard drive, it clearly states why.

I checked all the other negatives posted (except the one about hard drive expansion because I don't have or need an external drive) and I don't have problems with any of them.

I wouldn't pay full price to take the series three over the new, less expensive HD Series 2 (there aren't that many differences between them that an external hard disk can't solve), but with the huge Amazon discount in conjunction with the TiVo rebate, the difference in price is not that much and is worth it.

Now, if only TiVo would make a unit with three or more tuners... primetime has too many shows playing simultaneously for me to record all the ones I like!

Digital camera Review: Buyer beware on TiVo Series 3
Summary: 1 Stars

I've been a loyal TiVo subscriber since Series 1. I own a Series1, Series2 and most recently Series 3 HD. The Series 3 HD worked perfectly for 4 months with cable cards. It has recently, however, stopped working (constant reboots and locking up) and I have gotten no suitable solution from TiVo or my cable company for 3 weeks now. I have gone back to my cable company's DVR and this TiVo box is now a 600 dollar dust collector.

Digital camera Review: Buying this device is crazy...
Summary: 1 Stars

If you have a cable operator that offers a high def DVR like the Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD. 160 gig hard drive, no need for a cable card PLUS the navigator program guide, all for $6.95 a month lease. And you can plug in an eSata drive like the Seagate 300 gig drive (for under $200) and have a huge storage capacity. Both Dish and Direct TV have similar units for their services.

Digital camera Review: Can not Live Without it
Summary: 4 Stars

I originally had a DirecTV/Tivo unit 4 years ago which I liked very much. I switched to Cox cable and then back to DirecTV since then, both without TIVO. The DVR boxes offered from these companies are nothing like TIVO and I have been searching for a way to get back. I got my wish recently with Verizon FIOS service, cable cards and a series 3 TIVO. [...].

This unit works well and is a must for watching TV, especially in HD resolution. It is very hard to get used to anything else once you use TIVO's menu system. I highly recommend it. The home networking feature is a bit clumsy and the box tries to do much with an internet connection. I do not use these features since I have an AppleTV system do do the same.

Get TIVO if you want a hassle-free TV watching experience.
