Digital camera reviews of TiVo TCD652160 HD Digital Video Recorder

Digital camera Review: Another winner from TiVo!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my third tivo and their best yet. Ease of operation is great, the menus and such are all as before, and the interface remains as intuitive as ever. I had used the dvr from the cable company only because it recorded in HD (and the user interface was awful!) - but now that's over with. Yea! My only criticism is that most cable installers are not very conversant in cable cards yet, my installation took nearly all afternoon..... but again, it's worth it. Enjoy - it was worth the wait!

Digital camera Review: As usual, TiVo is fantastic.
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently purchased two of these units after having used a single Series 2 TiVo for the past 5 years. I loved my rock-solid Series 2 TiVo, but it lacked a dual tuner and, more importantly, HD capability. Where my particular Series 2 TiVo required the use of a set-top box provided by my cable company (Cox), the new TiVo HD requires cable cards to be inserted into the box. This is nice in that it removes a large piece of hardware (the cable company's set-top box) from my living room and bedroom. Instead of having a cable box and a TiVo stacked on top of each other, I have a single and elegant TiVo HD in place. While I love the new design/functionality of the TiVo HD and it's ability to stand alone without another set-top box, I'm a little wary of cable cards. Depending on your cable company, you may or may not have any difficuly with cable cards. When I first called Cox to remove my old cable boxes and install cable cards into my 2 TiVo HDs, they said that it shouldn't be a problem. When the installer arrived (he was a contractor, not an actual Cox employee), he had not seen a TiVo before and was not sure how to properly install the cards. After about an hour, he couldn't figure out how to get them operational, and just left. I called Cox about the problem and they sent out another technician (this time an actual Cox employee)later that week. With the new Cox technician I had much greater success. He was familiar with TiVo and had both of my TiVo HD units up and running within 20 minutes. I have two single-stream Motorola cable cards in each TiVo HD and have only had a few minor hiccups. For the most part, everything has been working perfectly. The TiVo HD produces fantastic picture quality on both standard-definition and high-definition content. With two TiVo HD units and a network connection, I have the abilitly to watch a recorded show in my living room and then finish it in my bedroom if I want...a feature that I love. Using Amazon's own 'UnBox' service, I'm also able to download the lastest movies and tv shows to my TiVo aswell. Overall, I've been extremely happy with my purchase. Though, I've read that some people have experienced difficulties with Scientific Atlanta branded cable cards (which TiVo is working to fix). It all depends on what your cable company provides. For people using Motorola cable cards, like myself, the TiVo HD has been fairly problem free. Based on my current set-up, I would highly recommend the TiVo HD. It most definitely outshines any other DVR on the market. For specifics on TiVo HD (or anything TiVO realted)you must go to http://www.tivocommunity.com/. It is by far the most comprehensive/technical TiVo related web community.

Digital camera Review: Avoid
Summary: 4 Stars

When I bought mine, the brochure didn't show any ads in any menus and infact, the service at the time had no ads except the showcase. Now the ads are annoying to the point of me avoiding using Tivo infront of people out of embarrassment. Alot of customers are complaining. They are raping the customers with ads in every nook and cranny. AVOID this product.

Digital camera Review: Awesome - especially w/Unbox feature
Summary: 5 Stars

Update after 6-months: Was just talking about the Tivo last night and we both commented on wondering why we waited so long to get one. This comment was during watching a show, we decided to watch a movie instead so I went to Amazon and found a movie to download, she hit the record button on the show to finish later and we started watching the movie as it downloaded.

We've also learned the unit will record two programs at once as well as start recording automatically shows that you watch so if you get halfway through the show and decide you want to record it, just hit the record button and you have it from the beginning.

Also, being able to configure shows to record from the website is great or even start downloading Unbox movies when you are away (such as at work). When someone comes into your cubiffice and says "you really need to check out this show or that move", you just goto Amazon or Tivo and set it up in a couple minutes. Great stuff.

Just picked up a TiVo HD DVR from Amazon and the Wireless G USB adapter. I have had it for a couple of days now and wonder how I have gone this long without a TiVo and why more people don't have them. TiVo simply does a lousy job marketing. I am surprised by all the features and the capability.

Setup couldn't be any easier. If you can brew coffee, you can setup the TiVo with about the same amount of effort.

The bonus? The ability to use Amazon's Unbox with it. I downloaded a few episodes of TV shows and The Transformers movie. Excellent picture and sound quality, plus you can watch whilst downloading.

The TiVo HD is a Series 3. Says so on the box, the unit and in the firmware. The difference? Smaller hard drive (160GB vs 250GB), not THX and the standard remote. Don't lose sleep over THX. It is not worth the money and very few movies use it. And, don't worry about the drive size. You can easily upgrade to a larger size if you are technically savvy OR buy one ready to simply pop in for a few more bucks. I plan to up mine to 1TB, which should be plenty. And, if that runs out, you can add a second or an external.

Note that it takes anywhere from a couple hours to 24-hours to link to your Amazon account to make Unbox work. Also, takes about this amount of time to be able to setup your TiVo to record movies via the web. Yes, that's right, you can login to your TiVo account from anywhere and tell what movies/tv shows/news to record. You can even subscribe to entire seasons. You can also login to Amazon Unbox from work, another state, wherever, purchase/rent a movie or TV show and have it download and be ready to watch when you get home.

There are a number of other unmarketed cool features. I won't bore you, just explore TiVo's site.

Bottom line, get the TiVo HD DVR and Wireless G adapter and have fun.

Did I mention Unbox? Simply awesome - a little pricey on rentals (purchases are fairly priced). Though, the rentals are comparable to satellite or cable video-on-demand and simply great when you are in the mood to watch something, but don't feel like running out.

Digital camera Review: Awsome TiVo

TiVo has exceeded my expectations. After reading the manual, I was delighted with TiVo's bells and whistles. Great product!!!
