I highly recommend this DVR for both cable, or "over the air" broadcasts. I used it at first with just over the air. I live very close to Atlanta GA and received close to 20 digital channels for free. I later got Charter cable with CableCard and the Tivo has been outstanding. There is simply no better DVR on the market today.
One word of warning is that the cable companies do not deploy very many cable cards, so there is a lack of expertise when dealing with getting the card set up initially. I had 3 technicians at my house on 3 separate appointments before it worked correctly. The issue is how they put the cable card information in the system. If it is not done correctly, the card will not work. You might have some pain with the initial install. Once this was corrected however, the Tivo has been rock solid with no issues whatsoever. And to be fair, it is not Tivo's fault that the cable companies do not train their personnel thoroughly.
Digital camera Review: Best DVR ever Summary: 5 Stars
I have used the ReplayTV, Cable Company, and Tivo Series 2 DVR's. I firmly believe that the TivoHD is the best DVR of the bunch. It took a solid platform (Series 2) and made it even better. I'm using it with a mult-stream CableCard from my cable provider and it works great. You can now watch content as it is being downloaded from Amazon Unbox and it is easy to turn closed captioning on and off. As soon as I can find one I'm going to purchase the Esata add on drive to expand my capacity even further. I highly recommend the TivoHD to anyone looking for a quality DVR.
Digital camera Review: Best DVR on the market hands down! Summary: 5 Stars
Picked up the TiVo HD in September and have loved it since. Our cable company is Verizon FiOS, and the TiVo works great with the two cable cards Verizon provided. I also have it connected to my Mac computer wirelessly. This gives me access to my photo library and iTunes from the comfort of my couch. The ease of use is what has kept me a loyal TiVo customer since 2005. I have owned or used DVRs from Verizon, Comcast, and DirecTV. None of them even come close to what the TiVo is. Do not let the price of this item scare you away - it is worth every penny!
There is one MAJOR downside to the TiVo - it is not wireless. So you either have to fork out more money for a wireless adaptor, or run a wire to your router.
Digital camera Review: Best DVR out there Summary: 5 Stars
Tivo is still the best DVR out there. This beats any cable company DVR by light years.
If you have cable, you will need a cablecard installed inside the unit in order to get all of your digital channels, and to take full advantage of HD. The cable company might charge up to $2/mo for this.
Storage space may be an issue if you record a lot of HD. There are easy ways to upgrade the internal hard drive (if you are technically inclined). I upgraded the internal drive to a Western Digital Green 1 TB, which provides over 1,200 hours of standard def recording, and over 120 hours of HD. If you don't want to do that, there is also external storage that can be easily attached.
Your TV will never be the same.
Digital camera Review: Best Tivo Ever Summary: 5 Stars
Everything I could ask for was in the box. Dual cable card? You got it. HD Tuner built in? It's there. Ethernet? Not wifi, but you got it. Add to all of this Tivo's ease of use and set up and this box can do it all. Hard drive space goes fast at higher quality recording levels, but the eSATA expansion drive is out now.
