Digital camera reviews of Tiffen 58mm UV Protection FilterDigital camera Review: Does what it is meant to do Summary: 4 StarsThe UV filter is not as strong as it could be, however, this filter is more meant as a protector for your lens and it does that perfectly well.
Digital camera Review: Filthy, pitted filters Summary: 2 StarsBoth of the Tiffen filters I bought (2 separate orders, a few weeks apart) arrived smeared with some kind of greasy gunk.
It was extremely difficult to get them clean.
What ever the stuff was just got smeared around, and it took me forever to get it all off.
I still worry that there may be a film of it left on there that will degrade the clarity of my photos.
It wasn't worth the hassle to return them, but next time I need a filter, I won't buy Tiffen.
Digital camera Review: Good filter for digital Summary: 5 StarsThis filter is used to balance the brighter areas of your picture to the darker ones, e.g. lighter sky with a darker landscape. It works well with digital because although you can't place the line of density anywhere (it's fixed in the middle but can be rotated), you can later crop in you're editing to get the desired composition. Filter is glass and better than Cokin which is plastic and scratches easily. Cokin filter holder has the advantage of complete adjustability because you slide the filter in and out as well as rotate it. By the way .6 ND is equal to one stop of light, something Tiffen doesn't explain in their marketing materials. They also have half stop, two stop and three stop grad NDs. There are high quality glass filters made for the Cokin system, but they cost 2x or more than the Tiffen.
Digital camera Review: It does the job Summary: 5 StarsThe Tiffen 58mm uv filter does the job. My main purpose is to protect the lens, which it does fine , with no noticeable optical effect. Any improvement in picture quality is a plus.

Digital camera Review: Got a "Demo" or re-stocked damaged return Summary: 1 StarsI just decided I'm never purchasing low cost optics by mail again. I purchased a UV Haze and a circular polarizer. The polarizer was perfect, pristine and new. A great buy. The UV Haze had a worn case, when opened was mis-repacked with the instruction manual between the filter and the packing foam protector. The manual was well worn and obviously USED a lot. And of course the UV Haze filter was SCRATCHED. This is a glass filter with no coatings so it takes a real good ding to scratch it with a nice deep 1/4 inch scratch.
I could spend $5-$10 to return it for an exchange, and maybe I will not get a damaged one again, and maybe I will. I question any company that re-stocks an obviously damaged and very worn item. After spending for the extra postage the mail order filter will not be a very good buy.
