Digital camera reviews of Tiffen Dfx Essentials Creative Digital Effects Software

Digital camera Review: Not terribly useful
Summary: 2 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I suppose this was easy enough to use, but it wasn't terribly useful. First, many of the effects included here can be obtained elsewhere, usually for less, and sometime for free. Second, most of the effects that you might consider worth the price have been left out, forcing the user to purchase the full edition. Pass.

Digital camera Review: Very limited
Summary: 2 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This software consists of a set of filters together with very basic photo resize/rotate functions. Here is what I found.

1. Functions:Resize/rotate: I don't even count this as part of the functions: you can have this in Windows Paint in your O.S.
2. Filters: This software targets people with little photo editing experiences. You apply a set of filters to your originals layer after layer. You can selectively apply the layers you choose and adjust the intensity of the effects.

Pros:
Easy to use.

Cons:
1. Lacking good file/image browsing: What is provided is a very basic WIndows file browsing dialog. YOu have to know exactly the location and name of your files. I was expecting a more sophisticated graphical file browsing interface.

2. Image in central preview window is soft: Originally I thought the image is actually soft. I then opened the image in other software, e.g. Internet Explorer or Windows Paint. I found that it is Tiffen that shows it soft. It is very confusing. If the image preview window cannot faithfully show what the image is, then how can I apply effects on it? I don't even know if I need to apply sharpening on it or not.

3. Limited functions: What it provides is only different kinds of filters. I found this is the major drawback. It is boring and very limited.

Conclusion: If Tiffen wants to get into the market of amateur photo editing, they have to come up with something at least comparable with Photoshop Elements. The software is so limited that I am not going to organizing my photos (the function Tiffen doesn't have) with different software and use Tiffen to do post-processing. With the price tag of $59.95, it is more expensive than Photoshop Elements after rebate. Photoshop Elements provide all the functions for general users: photo organizer and much more sophisticated photo post-processing. So my suggestion is go buy Photoshop Elements just like most of people do and skip this one.

Digital camera Review: WELL THOUGHT OUT
Summary: 5 Stars

The included short instruction video demonstrates all you need to know to get full use of this program. While Tiffen calls it Dfx Essentials, I think it is fully sufficient for most serious photo hobbyists. In fact, I can't imagine how Tiffen could offer so much for so little money.

The filters included can make subtle changes or dramatic changes to any photograph. Users can set-up filter sets and use them to change numerous photographs quickly. Users can also set-up a variety of filter sets, give each set a name, and keep them for future use. All functions are easy to learn and easy to use.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
If you use or want to use Photoshop Essentials but just can't afford the giant price tag, I recommend the Tiffen DFX Essentials software. It lets you do everything with pictures that any normal user would want. A great value!
