Digital camera reviews of TomTom GO 740 Live 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable Live Internet Connected GPS Navigator

Digital camera Review: Do not support hypen stree number.
Summary: 2 Stars

I had been using Tom Tom Navagator on a Smart Phone for years. One thing I hate is the software do not allow me to enter a hyphen in the street number ( ie 94-4543). Just bough this 740 Go and it has the same limitation! Most of the new towns in Hawaii have this type of address. Tom Tom technical support keep telling me they are work to resolve this issue since 2007 when I first contacted them.

Digital camera Review: Don't buy this model- Live services won't update
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this unit in October, and when the introductory LIVE service expired after 3 months, the next year activation of Live service cost $121.50 . The HUGE GLARING problem is that most of the units are faulty and WILL NOT allow updating LIVE services. To remedy this, a few calls to tech support, and guess what? They will only send out a "refurbished" replacement, and you have to send your unit back to them and wait 2 weeks while they send you a relacement refurbished unit (worth half of what you paid for it) via UPS GROUND, not even air mail or next day. The orders for this DISMAL CUSTOMER SERVICE come from headquarters. SO, Tom Tom Headquarters- Why should anyone trust you to support your expensive products when this is how you mandate paying customers be treated?
I admit that the unit is somewhat useful, but I bought from Tom Tom based on thier good reputation. It now seems that it was a mistake, and thier good reputation undeserved.

Digital camera Review: Feature Packed Device
Summary: 4 Stars

Device has excellent features. Accurate and fairly easy to use. Some items are missing. For example there is no altitude feature as on other devices. Also, the Computer interface is buggy.
The shortcuts are limited and the voice command feature is not accessable with a remote. You have to tap the screen for voice.

Digital camera Review: Foreign Affairs!
Summary: 3 Stars

I got this to make getting around in my Fusion Hybrid. (Why pay $2000 for the GPS package from Ford, when TomTom gets you there for less?). I loved the initial usage. Took it on backpack trip and it navigated us up the forest service roads with great ease. Now that the initial service has expired I notice it takes longer to find the GPS satellites. Sometimes I am 1 - 2 miles down the road before it establishes contact. I use the QuikGPS service that locates the satellites easier, but it still lags. It also directs me in the least straight path occasionally. I know some of the roads well enough I ignore the suggestions for turning here or there, but in an unknown city I might be misdirected. We will take it to Maui in January and see how it handles the tropic roads.

Then there is the Foreign Affair! I subscribed to TomTom Live and when the bill was listed on the credit card it included a Foreign Transaction fee. They billed the service charge from Seattle, WA to Concord, MA via Barcelona or Kuwait. The credit card company reversed the Foreign Transaction Fee, but explained that if I use the TomTom Service again after my 6 months is up, I would have another Foreign Transaction Fee. Inquiries to TomTom have fallen on deaf ears.

Digital camera Review: Go 740 please GO AWAY
Summary: 1 Stars

The Go 740 Live could be a very good product except it is produced by a company that does not care about their customers. Mine stopped connecting to the Live service so they had me send it in and then sent me a refurbished replacement which is a very poor practice. Their excuse is the warranty says they can send a refurbished unit as a replacement for a new unit.
They updated the application software which caused the 740 to stop working with the PC online emulator in their Home software. That happened over a month ago and they still do not have it fixed. That application also made the 740 stop importing the phone book from my cell phone. It worked in the previous version of the application.
I was trying to use the mapping software to travel to Des Moines, IA and they don't actually have Des Moines on their map. It always says Des Moines with a name in parenthesis behind it which is an actual town in Iowa, i.e. Des Moines(Batavia#, East Des Moines#Oskaloosa#, West Des Moines#Oskaloosa#. If you try to use one of those destinations in takes you to the town listed in parenthesis not Des Moines. Some are 90 to 100 miles from Des Moines. It makes the mapping software for that destination worthless. I was told by their support that was normal for large cities. Not in any other mapping software I have used is that normal.
The have map share which can be used to change the map to what it should be. I tried to add a street which has been open over 2 years. The change did not appear on map share so I asked why and was told it has to be verified by their mapping company #which they own) and can not be released until a major map release is made. The new street is very apparent on Google Earth as a bright white street. Not to difficult to verify it is there.
I DO NOT recommend this product!
