Digital camera Review: Good Unit Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent Unit. Lots of availablee changes you can download from website for self preferences. My favorite is the Fixed Camera Alert system for Photo Enforcement. Google works great too. Other than the $119 annual subscription fee and extra cost to update maps, it works good.
Digital camera Review: Good for the Most Part.... Summary: 4 Stars
I wanted this item for Christmas and after reading the reviews and looking at other models I decided to purchase this GPS. The first item I ordered from Amazon was defective. I didnt open it till christmas day, but I promptley emailed Amazon about returning the item, and they responded in one hour on christmas day! I tried everything to fix my unit, but still had no luck. So after contacting amazon they were going to overnight a new one. I cant say enough about Amazon customer service. The best! I dont think it was TomTom's fault or Amazon's for sending me a dead unit. I think stuff just happens. However if I received another bad unit or if there were more reports of bad units then it would be a different story.
Ok now for the review. I first installed the TomTom home software on my mac. Easy very simple. Then I connected the TomTom and it updated the device. I then tried to do stuff that required the cellular connection. I tried the gas comparison. Worked great. I have used this device for over two weeks now and i must say this worked almost perfectly. First the bad. The Google search takes a long time. I am so used to having search results come up fast, so when I say its slow, probably a few minutes. But that feels like a long time if that is all your waiting for. The device rebooted spontaneously once. It wasnt that big of a deal since it loads the route/directions again, but if you are in the middle of a turn or something complicated it could be. The reboot was fast and it did that only once. One day in the morning and in the evening the google search did not work. The device had cellular coverage since I tried the gas price function. My last complaint is the bluetooth speaker seems a little low. I tried raising the volume on the device, but then the spoken text is too loud. I cant find a way to just raise the call volume. Its adequeate but any long conversations it could be a problem.
Now the positives. I like the maps and interface. I am used to TomToms so i like the comfortable feeling. I love the gas price look up functions. Traffic works great in Northern Virginia/Washington DC. Its cool that is says traffic delay before you even come up to traffic. Plus it automatically adds time. Plus it will even let you know that even with the traffic this is the fastest route. I like the IQ routing. It has found routes that I would not have taken and it is indeed faster. I like that my phone is connected. Voice control works great. I like the look of the device. The window mount is really easy to connect and when you take the GPS off the mount you dont have to unplug it since the power cord connects to the mount.
Overall I am happy with the device. It does its core function of giving directions really really well! Awesome! However if you are buying this for Google Search, or the bluetooth phone part(fine for short conversations, but not long ones) you might want to reconsider. I like looking up the weather too.
Digital camera Review: Good match for Verizon Storm Summary: 4 Stars
I had a 3-year old $750 Garmin iQ M5. The charging function stopped working. I contacted Garmin and they indicated they no longer supported the product. The iQ M5 did everything I needed it to do and I had just paid for maps for Europe, so I was pretty ticked off they wouldn't service the unit. In its life I had to replace the unit 3 times to fix problems with the unit. Considering I was forced to buy a new GPS, I was sure not to buy another Garmin product, so onto Tom Tom and onto a
whole new generation of GPS.
The pros: The 740 finds satellites very quickly. The interface is easy to use. It comes activated with their road delay data cell feed (even though their tech support wasn't sure and put me on hold for 15 minutes..by then I figured out it was working) On a trip from Baltimore to NYC it found several road delays, but there wasn't a better option to be had. It didn't detect a back-up on the south bound Del. Mem. Bridge. But there would have been no alternative anyway. It worked well in NYC under many buildings. It tells you the speed limit of the road you are on and your current speed. This data was wrong on one road by 5mph, but I liked knowing what the speed limit is.
Usually Verizon kills manufacturer cell phone features so they can find a way to charge you a monthly fee for the service. So I was happy to find that the 740 was able to connect with my Blackberry Storm via Bluetooth. In fact, it found the 740 far easier than the Verizon headset accessory. Communication through the 740 on the phone works great. Using the speaker phone in the 740 worked great for answering incoming calls. It imported my contacts from the phone, but dialing from the 740 is very awkward. Overall I love the lane function and many of the other features of the 740.
The cons: The semi-flat-matte LCD screen is sometimes hard to see in bright light. It's not unusable, but the glossy/bright Garmin iQ M5 screen was FAR FAR easier to see. I tried to use the cheapest gas function, but it seemed to greatly increase trip time - a 2 hr trip became 4 hr trip in NJ heading south, and I couldn't force it to find a better route - but I may not have been using it right. The voice recognition is the most useless part of the 740. It understands about 1 in 25 of the voice commands. We had fun listening to it's wrong interpretations to our commands, but it was totally, completely useless and in fact you'll get in a wreck far faster trying to use that, than entering the data by hand. I suggest you buy a case for it, so when you hide in your car the screen doesn't get scratched.
I'm not sure if the Live feature of this is worth $9.95 a month, but so far I'm digging the connectivity of this GPS with road data. If they had a better screen and decent voice recognition software that would include contact name voice dialing from your contact list, this would be a killer GPS.

I bought this for my wife and she uses it all of the time and couldn't be happier and she never gets lost anymore and is now on time.
