Digital camera reviews of TomTom ONE 3rd Edition 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Vehicle NavigatorDigital camera Review: AFFORDABLE, RELIABLE, AND QUICK AND EASY TO USE Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered this product on a Tuesday on Amazon after researching the TomTom and Garmin reviews and it arrived the very next day on Wednesday!
The hardest part was opening the package!
Simply mount to your window or dash (for my big Dodge truck), plug in, turn on and it knew exactly where I was! After a few minutes I had picked my language, set the time, and input my home address.
Literally five minutes after turning it on I was following it's directions home from work...perfect at every turn. I deliberately missed a turn and it simply recalculated quickly to get me back on track!
I work a side job as a photographer for a Chicago suburban fire department and TomTom will be a HUGE help in getting to the scene quickly! No more flipping through three-ring binder map books for me....simply touch the screen "find route" and "street intersection" and I'm there!
From what I've read, the Garmin will tell you the name of the street whereas TomTom just says to turn left or right....
Digital camera Review: AWFUL PRODUCT, STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE!!!!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
UPDATE: MY TOMTOM QUIT WORKING AFTER JUST OVER A YEAR OF USE AND SINCE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY TOMTOM WILL NOT FIX IT. I WAS TOLD BY THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE TO FIND SOMEONE ON THE INTERNET TO FIX IT!!! I WOULD HAVE PAID THEM TO FIX IT IF THAT WAS AN OPTION BUT IT IS NOT.
The TOMTOM is easy to use and is ready to go right out of the box, but I would not recommend this unit to anyone. It has directed me through more back roads, dirt roads and subdivisions than I care to think about. If you like to drive through residential developments instead of the main road then by all means buy this unit. I tried to set the unit for both "fastest route" and "most direct route" with little effect on how it routed me. It once tried to route my through Wisconsin when I was trying to drive back to Flint, MI from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. On a mountain road in Kentucky, as I drove around the curves it repeatedly told me to make turns-- as if I had any other choice.
On most GPS units I have used, you can get an eagle's eye view (zoom out)by hitting the minus key on the unit. On the TOMTOM, you have a very limited overview function, maybe only 2-4 miles ahead. If most of your trip is going to be on the same highway, it is impossible to visually check your progress due to the limited zoom function. When you use the minus key to get an overview of the route, as soon as you get near any cross road, the unit jumps back to the default zoom.
I find this unit to be a constant irritation when driving. The voice commands are incessant. It seems to nag more than instruct. It tells you over and over that a turn is coming up. I usually turn the volume down on the TOMTOM so I can barely hear it.
The battery life is very short. It must be plugged in to the cigarette lighter while in use. It did not come with a wall plug. If you parked your car and went on a walking tour of a city with the TOMTOM it would be of very little use to you. My TOMTOM battery life is only about 20 minutes, forget about using it on a bike trip, though the unit does give you routing options for bike trails.
Digital camera Review: Actually, this review is of the ONE 2nd Edition Summary: 5 Stars
For some reason, TomTom does not list the 2nd Edition on the list of products for reviews. That is a shame, because the 2nd Ed. is one of the best GPS devices ever available. I dare to say that it is even better than the 3rd edition, as it has a slot for a SD card, what opens a new world for updates, and upgrades. The 2nd. Ed. is easy to use, robust, and takes you from point A to point B without breaking the bank. Differently than most people believe, it can be used with MapShare (you need to update it through TomTom Home), and supports most of the recent map versions. If you are bold enough to try something more advanced, you can even enable TTS (Text to Speech), so that it would not just tell you "turn right in 100 feet", but it would also tell you the name of the street, like the most expensive models. The only con is the poor battery life. However, if you are not planning to use it for walking, that should not be a problem. In a nutshell, it is a great product, does what it was meant to do, and does not cost much.
Digital camera Review: Almost Perfect Summary: 4 Stars
Its been a month since I had The TOMTOM and it works great. I used it a day after I received it for a 3 day outing. It took me exactly where I wanted to go without any problems. The real clincher is when we used it at night during a rainstorm and we arrived at our destination with no problem. The map updating works great and you can preplan your trips on the TOMTOM itself or by connecting it to your computer. The TOMTOM screen pops up right on the computer and you can use your keyboard to do everything on the TOMTOM.If I had one complaint about it it would be that it doesnt have text to speech. Honestly, it works great without it. I would highly recommend it.
Digital camera Review: Almost perfect but not quite Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this GPS, never having had one before. I recognize it's an "entry level" unit and that was exactly what I wanted. Low cost, no Bluetooth, no MP3 player. Perfect for me and for anyone who is slightly technologically challenged and doesn't want to spend a fortune to find that out. It's extremely easy to use with very little training. It will get you from here to there basically any way you want.
My only reason for the less than perfect rating is map inaccuracies. Let's be fair, I agree roads change but it tried to take me the wrong way on a one way street in Brooklyn (the road wasn't new) and it didn't show the road intersection I was looking for until I worked it out on the map feature first. (It seems as if it "learns" as it goes along, though)
Bottom Line: I would definitely buy this unit again. It's the best value around for guys like me who want it more for "toy value" than need. I'm not saying it's a toy, I'm saying it's something I wanted more than needed. The price is great and the features are plentiful. My only caution is don't trade your brains in for this. You must always remain wary of the instructions given. My guess is this is true of any of them, though.
My second tip is spend some time planning your route before you go somewhere to see what it's telling you. Get familiar with your route ahead of time and work out whatever alternatives you may want before you drive off. It's better to do it in your living room than at 70 miles an hour down the freeway.
