Digital camera reviews of TomTom ONE Portable GPS Vehicle NavigatorDigital camera Review: Better than the NAV in my 2005 Accord Ex Summary: 4 Stars
Right out of the box the unit was able to pick up the satellites and align itself; I was 5 feet from a window. I am not going to review all the specifics of this but there were defintely a few things I thought worked well for me.
. it was easy to use right out of the box, better than the nav unit my wife has in her accord ex.
. in one case I hit a traffic jam, I clicked on the avoid road block 100 yards ahead and the unit quickly figured out an alternate route by passing the roadblock.
. the estimated elapse time and arrival time was great Take the guess work out.
. the screen is a perfect size, just right and if I opted to I can slip it into my pocket and walk with it. Not sure why anyone would want a larger one. Block the windshield and harder to hide if I need to park.
Why not a perfect score? It would have been if no for the fact this is the first portable unit I've ever owned and no other unit to compare it to.
I paid about ~235, bargain for the quality.
Digital camera Review: Beware of updates Summary: 4 Stars
The unit functions great. The home version on the CD is outdated. If you have a constant internet connection it will prompt you to download the update. The phone, voice and GPS quickfix updates are fine. As of this current writing there is a problem with the 6.56 application update. Do not download or install it as yet. Try the windows approach and wait a couple of months before attempting this one. Make sure you backup beforehand.
Digital camera Review: BlueTooth Inclusion is Misleading Summary: 3 Stars
The TomTom One is a truly fantastic device with only a couple of flaws. The first and most glaring of the problems I found with this device is that the marketing department forgot to mention that the inclusion of BlueTooth is only for data collection for certain additional services. Services that cost both a subscription fee and data resources through your cellular provider. It does not include the ability to use your cell phone through the BlueTooth connection. I am truly puzzled why any company would put the hardware in a device and fail to extend the full capabilities of said technology to the consumer.
The other problem is that within California it is illegal to mount a devices like the TomTom One to your windshield but there is no means provided for mounting it in any other way. This is despite the fact that this product was purchased in a California market. This simply strikes me as completely irresponsible. It was clear to me that TomTom knows the suction cup mounting system will not work on a dashboard because they are offering other mounting systems through their web site. For an additional expenditure, of course.
I was quite pleased with how easy the system was to operate. I was only irritated that a, "back," button wasn't programmed into every page. Such a tiny detail would substantially increase the usability of the TomTom One. The advanced features are pretty good, but these too, could use a little polish to really shine. Portability was also a major feature but this feature is also flawed because it doesn't come with a case.
All in all I am pleased with the function and performance of the device while only slightly disappointed that the marketing on the box was misleading. Rerouting was fast and accurate enough to work. In new development areas it was sometimes grossly inna I did take the unit back that I had purchased and decided to continue using an old fashioned map book. The flaws, the price, and the perception that fundamental features were left out gave me the fuel to reconsider the purchase. I personally recommend that you consider the TomTom GO 510, or the TomTom GO 910 if you are looking at the One as a navigation solution. The cellular connectivity is really worth the difference in price if you are BlueTooth capable.
Digital camera Review: Bluetooth claim is misleading Summary: 2 Stars
The biggest dissatisfaction I have comes from its Bluetooth function claims. The product description leads me to think that it is a hands free device. I spent hours, finally figured out that the Bluetooth can only be used to transmit data to their TomTom Plus service via a cell phone, it is not a hands free device at all, which means you have to spend more money monthly to subscribe to the service and spend more money monthly to upgrade cell phone service to use your cell phone as a modem (otherwise you would get charged astronomical fees for data transfer by Cingular, Varizon......believe me, it happened to me and it hurts)
TomTom.com offers very confusing descriptions too, all pricing info is in Euro instead of US$.
If you don't want to spend the extra recurring cost to actually take full advantage of the Bluetooth, you may as well save the $100 to buy a Mio C310x, which is not equipped with Bluetooth, but has an MP3 player built in and its GPS function is just as accurate as TomTom One, not any worse by my testing.
Digital camera Review: Bought as a present Summary: 4 Stars
I Bought this for my niece's graduation present. She is on her way this Fall to go to Law school and is not to familiar with Tenn.
She was thrilled with it, and learned to use it quickly. She told me several of her friends want one now.
