Digital camera reviews of TomTom ONE XL 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

Digital camera Review: Cute.
Summary: 2 Stars

I've had Garmin 2610 for a couple of years which I bought refurbished for about the same price as a brand new One XL. 2610 (it can be found for a lot less than ONE XL) is a "reference" GPS for this review.

ONE XL Pros:
1. Lightning fast GPS lock
2. 3D map
3. Bluetooth (but no handsfree)
4. Chatter kept to minimum and to the point.
5. Very simple and intuitive interface
6. Portable/2-hr power reserve
7. Traffic info support

ONE XL Cons:
1. Low contrast display - very hard to see in direct sunlight
2. Does not auto switch to night/day display mode based on time of day
3. Does not adjust display brightness automatically
4. Route calculation is not that fast
5. Sometimes gives weird directions, for example left turn, followed by a u-turn instead of a legitimate right turn
6. Tele-Maps are not as accurate as I've heard, at least in DC-Baltimore area.
7. Can not plan a route on a PC and upload it to GPS.
8. Can't confirm location of the POI in the Navigate To/POI screen. Must calculate the route before you can see if you selected the right POI.
9. Does not turn itself on/off when you start/stop the car. Must operate the power button manually.
10. Still no text-to-speech just like an old 2610.
11. $100 extra for just a bigger display compared to non-XL might not worth it.

I'll probably keep this TomTom considering the 15% restocking fee at Best Buy.

Digital camera Review: DON'T BUY TOMTOM
Summary: 1 Stars

tomtom started acting up after a year. had trouble getting satellites. did a reset. worked okay. now it won't boot up at all. followed all tech support directions. should work perfectly (or at least longer than 2 years) for the price tag!! garbage!

Digital camera Review: Decent for first time users
Summary: 4 Stars

Good and easy to use device. It did take a while understand the directions on when to actually exit off the freeway. "turn right ahead" is not alot help and made me anxious when actually to get off the freeway. Turns out there are secondary instructions later on in the prompt,,but still. Also POI does not have the address available upon first prompt and only the phone number. When you are on the freeway, addreses and exits are way more helpful than the phone number. Also with recent reviews about bad experiences with the wrong version when upgrading. I'm hesistant to muck around with it. Overall still a good GPS, for the price.

Digital camera Review: Did All That Was Asked Of It
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this as a Christmas Present for my GF. She has a slight problem with directions and I thought this would be a great help. We took a trip to Chicago and she printed off directions from one of the on-line map sites. We hooked up the TomTom and put in the address we were heading to. It told us how long the trip would take and kept it updated along with the distance. Turn by turn right to the front door. It worked so well, we never did use the printed directions and my GF is now a believer in the TomTom. Well worth the investment.

Product appeared to be just what I needed. Simply GPS unit without paying for a lot of extras. The windshield mount is not the best (wife has a Magellan mount is superb) but functional - it did not fall down once securely fastened via suction cup. The display is flaky with near road titles appearing only as you approach them. Looking at the 2-D display in my neighborhood (several visible roads on the screen) only the road I was on displayed the street name. Lastly, the routing is sub-par as compared to my wife's magellan. The unit had me cut through a shopping mall parking lot to reach my destination. Consistently had me take extremely long out-of-the-way routes, did not pick the fastest route, at one point I was looking at my house from another road in my sub - the unit had me going back out to the main road and looping back around another entrance instead of taking the next road about 150 yards to my house. That sealed the deal. I am returning this GPS. It appears you need to spend around $150 for a good unit. This was onsale for $99 so I thought I would try it. lesson learned.
