TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
This was my 1st attempt at purchasing a portable GPS unit for my car.
I paid extra for next day delivery, another mistake. The unit arrived on time, but problems began when I started the set up procedure. Instruction booklet reads that the unit may be behind in map updates. Not to worry it says though, HUH. As I begin set up and download updates, the system tells me my unit is at least 2 map updates behind, but I can use the authorization number given for free updates for new units (WRONG). Each time I try to use this authorization number, I am directed to purchase the upgrade, which is not cheap by the way. I call customer service. The young lady proudly tells me that they have suffered some theft of updates for maps in the past and in order to curtail this. I need to file a grievance, get a reference number, send a fax with a copy of my receipt, long distance by the way and wait for a confirmation email and another autorization number to update my maps in my unit. Who wants such a hassle right out of the gate or box for that matter. Trust and believe, this unit goes BACK ASAP. I am not going to pay for such a hassle when I buy a brand new unit and am considered one of those people who steal updates. (that's exactly how I feel). I should have listened to my friends recommendation and bought a Garmin.
I suggest you do the same or continue shopping or you too shall have the same experience.
Digital camera Review: Fantastic GPS Summary: 5 Stars
I would first like to say that if you are looking for a gps nav system for your car that has Text to Speech without all the bells and whistles this is it. It has a nice big screen and is easy to use. With a bluetooth phone you don't have to worry about being stranded again but then if you have a bluetooth phone why would you worry to begin with? Just dial 911 right! But this is a very nice system for the money and with TomTom home software you can get updated maps and help update maps yourself. About the only complaints I have are the fact that they don't offer any other mounting options.

I bought TomTom One XL-S in May and used it on my trip in Washington. I went to Seattle, Woodinville and Mt. Rainier. It helped me 100% of the time and no arguments with my wife, she gave me the credits for doing this. It's highly recommended from me for those looking for a GPS for the first time. I did some research and compare the prices and fuctionality of the products, I ended up with this one. It's easy to set up right off the box, the maps were already preloaded and ready to go. I think that I wouldn't go to any unfamiliar places without my TomTom.
Digital camera Review: Fills my needs Summary: 4 Stars
This is my first GPS unit of any kind. Overall, I am very please with how well it works. Having it for just a month now, I am still exploring its capabilities. I had heard of problems with GPS if you don't follow its directions, but have seen none of that. If I choose a different route, say, around a traffic problem, than the one suggested, it just recalculates and shows me the way. The one thing that I can downgrade the unit on is the text to speech. While it is helpful about 80% of the time, it does have a tendency to mangle the street names. If the name is a straight up name, it has no problem. But, sometimes it destroys the name. It's a good thing that you can glance at the screen and see the written name. Without that as a backup, there are times that I would not have known what it was talking about. An example would be the street name "Pacifica". The other day I got what sounded like "pa-fee-ka". And when I drive a little north of here, it destroys the word "Sacramento". But these are really minor things and I would not say that it is a problem.
Overall, I would have to rate this unit very high. I drive around finding address every day and this little thing has saved me a lot of time. I have gotten to the point that I don't even think about where I'm going, I just let TomTom take me there. It's never wrong

Digital camera Review: Finding the way Summary: 5 Stars
Love it! Since my TomTom arrived, I have used it on many occassions. It leads me where I need to go with no problem. It is easy to use, and the larger screen is great. The spoken street names, make it nearly impossible to miss a turn. I no longer have concerns about getting lost, especially going somewhere for the first time.
