Digital camera reviews of TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS NavigatorDigital camera Review: gps Summary: 3 StarsWorks OK most of the time, but I have ended up at a cornfield a few time with the announcement "you have reached your destination"
Digital camera Review: Won't mount in my car/Fast Friendly Service Company anything but Summary: 1 StarsThe TomTom company seems OK, but sometimes their satellite system doesn't work. However, its better than my phone GPS.
The windshield of my car is not vertical. It sweeps back at a very odd angle. Look up Photos of the Honda Fit so You can see the problem I am having. The strange angle also makes the lower portion of the windshield at arm's length from the driver.
I am currently trying to find a way to mount it in my car, because its good enough to keep if it would only mount to the dashboard.
The Fast Friendly Service Company charges a 15% restocking fee, which is odd for an Amazon vendor, so be sure you really want something before you buy from them. A logic loop in the programming made it impossible to reach the seller to ask for permission to return it. After I put this fact in my feedback of them, they begged me to remove it because they are a small company and just trying to get ahead. I'd rather have an adapter to make it fit my car than return it. They haven't seemed to notice this because they were so horrified of my feedback that they forgot about everything else. They say they will make exceptions to the to the restocking policy. All you have to do is ask! Perhaps if enough people ask, they will give up this bit of harrassment on a regular basis. I found working with this company to find a way to mount the TomTom in my car tedious and tiring.
I'm currently working on my second attempt to try to find an adapter to make it fit a car witout a big lat spot on the dash and a windshield that is not vertical and far enough away that if I could mount it near the bottom of the windscreen, it would be hard to see. If that isn't possible, I will have to return it.
Digital camera Review: mixed bag Summary: 3 StarsWhy do I have a love-hate relationship with the XLS, this wonderful piece of junk? I bought it last year, Nov 5 2008, and it works beautifully! Hard to figure out how to use it - the manual was next to WORTHLESS - and once I understood the unit I enjoyed it! None better in my opinion. BUT (there is always a 'but') I own an iMac. Updating the unit last June destroyed it. Spent a full day backing up, downloading new map, etc, and sent it back because it wouldn't turn on. Got a new unit (WONDERFUL customer relations dept - but inexperienced on a mac), tried to update it - same problem. Got a new unit (WONDERFUL warranty!), told map problem was fixed - you guessed it - destroyed that one, too, got another unit just today, with a 2 year old map on it.
I won't hook it up to my iMac again, just enjoy using it (old map and all!). Good software, takes me where I want to go, comfortable in feeling it won't let me down. like an old pair of shoes, I guess.
Digital camera Review: TomTom One XL-S 4.3" Widescreen Portable GPS Summary: 5 StarsNot sure what "too small screen" means so I selected the middle...I don't agree the screen is too small, I think it's just the right size for the dash or windshield mount (at least for an '09 Toyota Corolla like I have) to not get in the way of your view otherwise. I did not purchase a warranty so I can't comment on that either, and I have yet to look into customer support since I haven't had any problems with it.
I think it's very clear to read, vibrant colors. It allows you to select many many features along your route, letting you know when there's a gas station coming up, a mac machine, and many others from A-Z.
I think this is a GREAT system, reasonably prices for it's attributes and ease. Easy to figure out and follow when you set it up either on your computer or in your car. Also, FYI the TomTom website allows you to register for free map upgrades when you sign up at their website.
I like the feature that reads off "Turn in 50 feet on Main Street...or Route 130..." rather than just the "Turn in 50 feet"...I recommend upgrading to this feature (meaning this model, rather than the Tom Tom model just below this one) for the little extra cost because it is hard to judge exactly where to turn if there's small busy streets, etc. This way you know exactly what name to look out for!
A great product, very very pleased with it!
