Digital camera reviews of TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS NavigatorDigital camera Review: DOES NOT COME WITH LATEST MAP UPDATE Summary: 3 Stars
I've just received the XL-S and haven't had time yet to use but I am sure I will like it based on specs. However, I bought it "New" from Amazon to make sure that I could download the latest map update for free (refurb devices don't provide for that). When I went to update the map, the message from Tom Tom..."You are not eligible for a free map download because either the 30 day period has expired for your navigation device or your device was not sold with a latest map guarantee". I went back and checked the Amazon product description and it doesn't mention the guarantee so they are correct. But Amazon is less than honest to not point that out since Tom Tom is noted for this feature.
So, if the latest map is important to you, figure that into the Amazon price. I think you will find a better deal elsewhere.
Digital camera Review: Daughter Summary: 5 Stars
My father wanted this TomTom. This was the best value on the web, and received it in perfect condition.
Digital camera Review: Difficult company to deal with! Summary: 1 Stars
I have not yet used the TomTom One XL-S to plan a route. Instead it has been in my family room since it was delivered, May 23. The "latest map update guarantee" does not work - the error message says my unit is either more than 30 days old or not eligible for the guarantee. Both of these statements are false.
I called customer support on Saturday and learned they are open during business hours, Monday to Friday. It took until today, Thursday, May 28, to fit their support hours with my schedule. The first support rep. I spoke with sent me an email with instructions to get the update; these did not work.
The second support person put me to work - I had to email a screen shot of the Amazon receipt to them to prove eligibility for the update (and navigating their website to send this email was not easy). Now, I have to wait to receive another email with some kind of info and call TomTom support again - for the third time.
I am on the verge of returning this unit. I keep telling myself to forget about the update and just use the unit, but then I figure I paid for this as part of the purchase.
Whether or not I eventually get the "latest map" is now immaterial ... I will never purchase anything from this company again; they just make it too hard.
UPDATE: I heard back from TomTom. It's unbelievable - as requested/required, I emailed the screen shot of my Amazon receipt - in the form of a MS Word document. They cannot open it and need me to re-send the receipt as a .jpg or .pdf. My home computer, and I'm sure many others' home computers, do not have this capability. I have 72 hours to do this, so by the time I return to my office on Monday, my "question" will have expired and I will be expected to start over. I'm disgusted and finished.
Digital camera Review: Does everything I need, mostly intuitive, battery doesn't last long enough Summary: 4 Stars
I have never owned a Nav unit before so this is my first. I don't like reading instructions so there is probably many things it can do that I will never know.
What I can tell you is:
* The screen size, resolution, and images provide a very clear picture of where I am and what's up ahead.
* The touch screen and integrated software is very easy to use even while making adjustments on the fly (while driving). Every once in a while it gets a section of a street wrong (one-way, dead-end, etc.) but it's very rare and almost never costs me wasted driving time.
* I wish there were easier ways to make waypoints to force the route to take certain roads and such, but it'll readjust and create a new route once it figures out you're going on the road/Hwy you want to go on, so it isn't a big deal. Also, the integrated software has been updated since I bought it a couple months ago and some minor things have been fixed so perhaps this will be addressed also.
* At first, the PC software worked on XP and not Vista but that was changed in the last upgrade.
* The only real problem I see is that when I really want to use it in a portable way (no car jack) the battery runs out in about 2 1/2 hours which is simply not enough time to drive into the spaghetti roads of Boston and back. I've gotten used to bringing the recharger cord for those kinds of trips.
Digital camera Review: Don't waste your money!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I don't normally reveiw anything but this GPS is SO bad I feel I owe it to the next guy to share my experience with it. I am THOROUGHLY disgusted with it!!!!I gave this thing 1 star only because it *will* get you from point a to point b albeit not necessarily the shortest or the fastest route!!! It has repeatedly tried to take me WAY out of my way to get to places I already knew how to get to but just needed the last few turns in a sudivision. I am convinced Tom Tom is either owned by a big oil company or has major stock in one!!!! This last trip today it had me going 44 miles in 56 minutes plus $5.00 in tolls as the fastest route, when I had it reconfigure it had me going 29 miles in 59 minutes with no tolls. I regularly travel this route and knew it only takes 30-35 minutes, which is what a map from one of the FREE map sites confirmed!!! And thats exactly what it took me!!!! This is not the 1st time I've seen this. I just cannot say enough bad about this peice of JUNK!!!!!
