Digital camera Review: DVD Tray Malfunctions and Other Problems
Summary: 1 Stars

WARNING: DEFECTIVE BATCH - Encouraged by all the great reviews here at Amazon, I purchased this Toshiba DVR-610. After some trial and error, I got it to dub some VHS tapes on to DVDs. However, when I tried to delete titles from my DVD-RWs, I had a problem. I was able to delete the titles per the on-screen display, but when I tried to re-record on to the disk, a got a message saying "disc full", and was unable to re-format the disc because the DVD MENU in the SET-UP mode was disabled - it's like the DVD was not recognized.

But the worst problem was the DVD tray malfunction. The tray got stuck, and after repeated attempts to extricate my DVD, I finally succeeded after unplugging and re-plugging. Thinking I had purchased a 'one-in-a-million' lemon, I returned the machine to Best Buy, and re-purchased one from Amazon. Guess what? I had the same exact problems, but this time, my DVD was permanently consumed by the machine, which made grinding noises each time I hit the 'EJECT' button. At the same time, only the VCR mode was available and I couldn't switch to DVD mode. In both instances of DVD tray malfunction, the DVD had been properly positioned in the tray.

Bottom line is, after 2 machines malfunctioning in the same manner, I would caution anyone against purchasing this unit. Perhaps Toshiba has recently made a BAD BATCH, which would explain why most of these other reviews are so good. I am sadly returning my 2nd unit to Amazon, and am really upset that I didn't have the positive experience that most other people did. Let this be a warning to prospective buyers - I think these latest units are buggy! And if you value your DVD collection, don't risk losing a valued DVD to this stupid machine.

Digital camera Review: DVD plays but VCR doe not? Updated December 3,2008
Summary: 2 Stars

After reading most of the reviews for the Toshiba DVR610KU, I was eagerly awaiting its arrival to copy some treasured VHS tapes to DVD. I have been able to play DVD's without any problems, the sound through my audio system is great and the instructions were easy to follow.
Today after finally getting a few minutes to try and copy a tape to DVD, I discovered I cannot even view the tape as it plays let alone record it.
I checked the manual and found that if the "S" video out connection is used, tape playback will not be viewable BUT I did not use the "S" video out as the better quality component video out is available, (my widescreen does not have HDMI capability as it is a 2001 Mitsubishi.
So even after pulling and reconnecting the output cables, still no visible picture from VHS.

After reading more of the reviews I saw a hint about skipping the "push play" button and then the dubbing button by just pushing the "dubbing" button. That worked! I was able to see what was playing from the VHS tape and also successfully recorded a dvd, which I finalized, and then checked to make sure it plays back.

I still cannot just watch a vhs tape. So I will continue to work on that and post an update if I figure it out.

Digital camera Review: DVD recorder

I find electronics too complicated to get set up. My son set this up for me and we still haven't worked out all the features. I have no complaints about the product just the set up.It would be great if these things could just be pluged in.

Digital camera Review: DVD, VCR, Combination
Summary: 4 Stars

Watch movies on both areas and the quality and clarity were very good.

Digital camera Review: DVD/VHS recorder great
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a pile of VHS tapes that I was able to throw away after copying them with this brilliant product. Although I no longer keep VHS copies of anything, the player still works fabulously to simply play DVDs. I was a genius to have purchased this product.
