Digital camera reviews of Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VHS Recorder, BlackDigital camera Review: DVD + VCR Combo Unit Summary: 4 Stars
I'm not an electronic wizgeek. But I completed a two year program in electronics and worked as an electronic tech for several years.
Toshiba DVR620: this has no Tuner but the nearly identical - but higer priced - Toshiba DVR670 does, and so the 670 will tune in Cable stations without a cablebox (i bought a DVR620 and DVR670).
These machines are a pain in the neck to set up and not designed to be user friendly. The Manual is a nightmare. It can't be trusted word for word, and is poorly organized. The Manual should be corrected/edited and offered as an online download so that you don't have to keep calling Toshiba. When you call Toshiba (and you will) they are helpful but that too is time and work.
I don't dub much from Tape to DVD although I tried it. It works OK. I use the DVR670 to tape off cable...and there it works OK. But there is no hard drive so you are recording to DVD or tape. The DVR 620 is mainly a space saver that allows me to play back tape or DVD in one machine.
Conclusion: I'd say the Toshiba DVR's work OK provided you're patient and willing to nerd around for your viewing pleasure. I just don't think that there are many better units out there...
I had a great experience buying the DVR620 from Amazon after a horrible experience with Discounts Jungle (a seller offered by Amazon where I originally bought a DVR620). My experience with Discounts Jungle: they sold me a used unit for new, and worse, it was defective out of the box. I would avoid them. But because I bought the item from Amazon I had Amazon as a backstop warranty and I feel confident that they will square things with Discount Jungle...eventually.
Digital camera Review: DVD / VCR player recorder Summary: 3 Stars
This product works great for converting old VCR
tapes to a DVD disk. Just drop in the tape
and a blank DVD disk, hit the record button
and it takes care of the rest.
Works great!
Digital camera Review: DVD recording challenging Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this unit so I could record my home VHS tapes onto DVD, as well as watch our old tapes.
Set-up was standard for DVD to tv. I did not need to read the instructions.
The picture quality on our large tv screen is somewhat fuzzy. This may be the nature of VHS to larger-than-the-old-tv rather than the unit itself.
I have yet to successfully transfer a tape onto DVD in a format that is usable on anything other than this machine. The instructions for doing this jump from page to page making it difficult to follow. For those who are not "old geezers" (my daughter's quote) this process may be intuitive, but as a technology immigrant I do not find it to be.
Digital camera Review: DVD/VCR Recorder review Summary: 4 Stars
I have only used this once so far to record from a VHS to a DVD. It seemed a bit daunting at first to set it up, but once I got the all the parts organized and sorted, it was quite easy. The recording was pretty simple as long as you follow the instructions. It plays back just fine on the DVD player, but I could not get it to play on another DVD player or even on my laptop. I'm going to have to try it out a few more times and see what I can do.
Digital camera Review: DVD/VHS COMBO RECORDER Summary: 5 Stars
I have just this week hooked up the machine to my Sony HiDef television. Connection was extremely easy using a single HDMI cable. Have only used it briefly and it worked well. Have not had time to record yet so I cannot judge that.
Shipping from Amazon was very prompt. I got it before it has arrived in the stores here in Florida.
