Digital camera reviews of Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VHS Recorder, Black

Digital camera Review: Did not work as advertised.
Summary: 1 Stars

This product never worked as advertised. The instructions are essentially useless. I followed the directions to the tee in regard to copying VCR to DVD but nothing I did worked.

After putting in a VHS tape that I had recorded (not copy protected and with the erase tab intact), and then an empty DVD -R disc and then following the instructions to transfer, the red circle with slash appears on screen. All cables were connected as per the convoluted directions. HDMI from the unit to TV is all that is needed for directly copying VHS to DVD according to directions but to no avail. I even tried every permutation of DVD disks...-R, -RW, +R, etc., but again to no avail.

I called the Toshiba support number after futilely visiting their online customer support and FAQ but the recorded msg. only referred me back to their online support site.

In my opinion, the instructions are worthless, the customer support is worthless and the unit is worthless.

I don't know how any of the other reviewers were able to get this thing to work but I don't have unlimited time to spend figuring it out, even if it were possible to figure it out. I sent it back within days to Amazon and will try to find another way to copy my VHS tapes.

Digital camera Review: Distorted
Summary: 4 Stars

Plays Vhs and Dvd pretty well. Records Dvd to Vhs pretty well. However, when recording from Vhs to Dvd the playback of the recording is somewhat distorted. Any advice would be helpful.

Digital camera Review: Does The Job
Summary: 3 Stars

Very nice and easy to use. It does the job and the layout is as close to a VCR as possible. The only thing I don't like about this DVD/VCR combo is the videotapes that are played in this unit appear in lower quality. The images appear too soft and there are often tracking issues. When these same tapes are played in my other VCR they are clearer with no tracking issues. As far as the DVD's they are crystal clear and record in true to broadcast quality. Just not the best VHS player.

Digital camera Review: Does a good job, but limited
Summary: 4 Stars

So far, I think this unit does a fine job. I bought it to copy old, homemade VHS tapes to DVD and the dubbing button is straightforward and simple. But the one thing I'm not happy with? When dubbing, you can't adjust the speed on the DVD, so you've got two hours, period. You can't adjust it to record for a longer length of time. (Or, if you can, I haven't been able to figure it out.) This means that any tape or concert that's two hours and ten minutes long gets cut off. Very annoying.

Digital camera Review: Does what the unit is supposed to
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this unit to convert old home video's into DVD's (which than can be put onto the computer). The unit does that reasonably well although the process to convert a VHS to DVD could be easier (i.e., not as many presses of a button and no need to "finalize" the DVD after each recording). Additionally, the instruction manual is not 100% accurate, as some functions were not properly described and/or had wrong set of processes. Thus, the unit requires some trail & error when setting up.
If there was a preset process or button to record VHS to DVD, that would have been ideal. Overall, the unit does what it is marketed to do but requires some tech knowledge (not plug n' play).
