Digital camera reviews of Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD PlayerDigital camera Review: Aggravating player. Summary: 3 Stars
Picture is great. But, there are several issues that are a pain-in-the-butt.
First off, if you are watching anything and hit stop to go into the setup, or even shut the player off, and then go back to the show, the player starts the show over. Most regular players will pick up where you left off. I've called support. They tell me that not all discs have that option. Huh? I have 8 movies and none of them do it. I don't have the problem on a couple of SD DVDs that I've tried.
Secondly, if I put in a SD DVD and try to start it in anything other then 480 an error message will be displayed that states it is an illegal operation and will automatically change the setting to 480p. If you are playing the disc and stop it to enter the setup to make the change the player will automatically turn the format into 4:3. Support says it's normal. I also have a Sony DVP-NS90V for upconverting and I don't have a problem with that.
[...] Great picture, tho.
Digital camera Review: Almost perfect and almost does everything I want it to Summary: 4 Stars
This hd player is one of the cheapest on the market and it plays the hd dvds well. Also I agree with a lot of the other reviews about the dvd up conversion it does that well, better than my regular hd upconvert dvd player. I recommend this player for price and reliability on playing dvds and hd dvds. Unless you have a 1080p tv then I recommend getting at least the a2o model which is a slightly better model than this one. The reason why I don't give it 5 out of 5 stars is because it doesn't play my PAL dvds where as my regular dvd players do, also it doesn't play video cds I make off of my computer and once again my regular dvd players do that. Last but not least and hopefully with firmware upgrades this will get taken care of, it plays cds like crap. Even if I put a brand new cd in there and play it all the way through it might skip. So yeah it plays dvd and hd dvds well and that is the least I can ask for especially for a price like that. Plus who doesn't have a lot of cd players now so you can simply just play your cds in something else. Bottom line buy this hd dvd player if you have a 720p or 1080i tv or planning on getting one.

The HD-DVD videos are amazing. My only gripes about this machine is the super slow startup times. Even my windows desktop loads faster than this box! Plus, it has been about 2 months and I haven't received my free HD-DVDs yet either. The same goes for the PS3 free bluray DVDs.
Digital camera Review: Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
I just received and I saw 2 hd films and 1 SD. Incredible with both, I have a Oppo 971 and this one is superior for Standart DVD's ,the image is close to HD. The HD-DVD's looks fantastic,Wow!!! for the first time I saw the 3 dimensional image that everybody talk about, far superior from the HDTV by cable that I saw. For close to 300 bucks you will never regret and if the war format ends and the blu-ray wins anyway you can buy another in a few months and have both.
Digital camera Review: Amazing Picture!! Summary: 5 Stars
I was going to get the Oppo upconverting DVD player, since I have a large collection of standard DVDs and wanted to wait out the High Def DVD war, but for only $150 more than the Oppo and five free HD-DVDs to boot, I figured I would go for the HD-A2: I have not been dissappointed. I was leary about how good the upconverting quality would be, but no more. I am really impressed! My Superbit copy of The Fifth Element looked amazing (as did The Incredibles and the Lord of the Rings). I left my old Sony DVD player hooked up at the same time and watched the same movie via standard and then on the HD-A2. I did not think the same movie could look so much better simply by upconverting. The sharpness and color detail looked much better. This player will give new life to my standard DVDs.
Powering on the unit and loading a DVD is a little slow, but not to the point that it is an issue. I am hooking this up via HDMI to a Mitsubishi LT-37132 (37" 1080p LCD TV). No complaints at all. In fact, the price dropped another $55 right after I bought it and Amazon refunded the $55 so the player was less than $100 more than the Oppo. After I get my five free HD-DVDs it will certainly be a better deal.
