This is simply an unbeatable deal. The unit is fully featured and performs impeccably, and for this price, it's hard to believe.
HD-DVD has the advantage over Blu-ray simply because it is less-costly to manufacture. Blu-ray may hold a bit more (9hrs vs 8hrs of HD content) but it just doesn't justify the huge cost difference. HD-DVDs are also REGION-FREE! This alone has persuaded me to go HD-DVD instead of Blu-ray since I hate strict format restrictions.

Incredible picture, outstanding sound, excellent upconversion of standard DVDs, CD compatible, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS-HD and more important..inexpensive.
Don't waste your money in Blu-ray, if for less you get the same superb high quality picture and sound. Blu-ray have more capacity? unnecessary.
Toshiba HD-A2 is a state-of-the-art player. Great job.

I bought this unit for my Samsung 23" HDTV in my bedroom since I did not have a DVD player in that room; my bedroom TV only has 720p capability so the A2 is more than adequate for the job. I bought an A20 a month ago for my living room flat panel 1080p TV and I was impressed by its performance. First thing out of the box I did the firmware upgrade, which had only taken 10 minutes on this unit - surprisingly very quick! And I verified it had indeed completed the upgrade in that timeframe. I initially hooked up this unit to my large HDTV in my living room side by side with A20. I had taken a few HD DVDs and a few standard DVDs and did a one-to-one comparison on sound and video. The A2 had remarkable performance like my A20. And I found this unit at a tad over $200 shopping around on the internet; heck, it was less than what I paid for my 30G iPOD. I could hear Bob Barker saying: "Yes! The price is right!" A great bang for your buck if you are looking for a DVD player to do a great job on up-converting standard DVDs and, of course, playing HD DVDs. I know a lot of people comment on how slow the unit loads, but I don't think it is all that long; both my laptop and desktop computers take much longer than this. The A2 and A20 take about 40 to 45 seconds to do the initial bootup and then another 20 seconds once you load a DVD and Viola! I shopped around for awhile and decided on this HD-A2 and I'm glad I did! I read the many great reviews and dived right in with Amazon's great price. The image quality with my Samsung LNT4661F LCD 1080p truly delivers sharp and crisp resolution. Sure, slow start up, but, whatever...it doesn't bother me. The results are amazing. I have owned the A2 for 1 year now and have updated it over my home LAN connection whenever I see an update released. I must say I have been very please with the picture and reliability. No problems whatsoever. I might also add that if your TV isn't over 50 inches 1080p will not show any difference. I have a 42" Panasonic Plasma and can't imagine the picture getting any better. For the price this is a value that can't be beat! My guess is you will see these in most homes in the near future since it is affordable for the mainstream public. I see some negative reviews here and can only suspect that the unhappy Bluray fans are at work. I have several coworkers using this product and all I have spoken with say they are satisfied. If you look at the average review rating for the total number of reviews it it obvious that this is a reliable product. Looks like they are selling like hotcakes. Our local Best Buy store sales person told me they outsell the Bluray players and have a hard time keeping them in stock. Do yourself a favor and buy one. Great price and great product.
