Digital camera reviews of Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player

Digital camera Review: Best in Class, But not Perfect
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this HD DVD player in my home for almost a year now. It was a rough start but we've made nice since then. I still have not seen a better HD DVD player in this price range so I'm calling it Best in Class. The picture is great and the sound is fantastic. I have a very good audio system set up and use all digital hook-ups.

The drawbacks are that you do need to either connect to the internet to get regular (quarterly) software upgrades. I get mine via CD disk as my DVD player did not take well to the direct USB connection. The updates are easy and take about 10 minutes. Since the updates the load time for the disc is faster and I have noticed fewer glitches during playback. The biggest issue for me is the long start up time, about 1 minute from the time you press the power button.

Highly recommend, but its like a new relationship, take the time to appreciate it and you will be rewarded.

Digital camera Review: Best value and confident choice for entering (and winning) the format war.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this player for a month or two now and I love it! The video quality is second to none(1080i or not.) I will agree that it takes a while to start up, but a recent firmware upgrade seems to have cut the time in half, maybe only 20 seconds now! I also was confused about the audio, if you dont have it running through HDMI all optical bitstream is converted to DTS, in the end this is awesome for anyone who has a reciever that wont support Tru-HD or DTS-HD, in DTS the difference between Dolby 5.1 and Tru-HD is huge.
The only complaints I have are small, the remote sorta sucks, who would make a often used product black and glossy? My remedy was to just leave the protective coating on, also the player is very, VERY deep, I got a new audio tower when I purchased this and it barely fits without crushing the optical cable.

Digital camera Review: Better than I expected.
Summary: 5 Stars

This machine was a revelation, being the low-end of the second generation of HDDVD players. The quality was superb right out of the box; easy to set up and play.I would suggest, in addition to having a High-Definition television, that you have a good, stong AV receiver, so that the great sound can be properly amplified (while I do not have a new receiver built for these players, my older machine-an Onkyo-played back in DTS.
It is difficult to describe the quality of the picture-it must be seen;suffice to say, there is more contrast and it is far richer than a regular DVD, although this machine upscales those discs and they look better than ever. I tried three discs: BATMAN BEGINS, MISSION IMPOSSIBLEIII, and best of all,PLANET EARTH.The latter was a revelation in every way, with an almost third dimensional look. To say it is satisfactory, is , indeed an understatement.
I wish there were no contest between DVDHD and BLUERAY because both will be hurt by this, and it limits the software we are able to receive. I have seen BLUERAY and while the picture is close to comparable, I must give the edge to HDDVD. The latter is also less expensive..although the discs for both are out of sight, and I will be force to build my collection for the new player, more slowly, depending upon huge discounts from local stores and Amazon.
The first DVD player I had was from Toshiba; and again, they have not let me down.

Digital camera Review: Better wait for a while to get this.
Summary: 3 Stars

Hi,

I got this HD-DVD player from Toshiba at May 2007. The price was aboce $300. To be honest, I think it is not a hurry to get this. Wait for price drop would be a better idea. Since after I get this and watched several HD-DVDs, yes, they are better but not worthy of another $300 if you already have a progressive dvd player. The drawback for this is it power up slow, read disc slow, and sometimes it will stuck there and even can not power off. All I can do is unplug the power cord.

Digital camera Review: Big Difference from upscaled DVD players
Summary: 5 Stars

I originally purchased the Oppo DV-981-HD, but was not entirely satisfied with the image quality on my Samsung LN-T4065F LCD HD TV. After selecting the HD-DVD format primarily because of the lower cost of entry when compared to Blu-Ray, I can say that I am very pleased with the decision. Picture quality is substantially better in true 1080p. Netflix also now rents many of their titles in HD-DVD format. If you are looking to take advantage of your HD TV, don't bother trying to save a little $$ by going with an upsampling DVD player. Jump right into the true HD players... it's a big difference.
