Digital camera Review: Can I pick 'em or what?

How's this for timing? The day after I ordered my Toshiba HD-A3, Netflix announced it was no longer buying the HD DVD format discs. The, the day the player arrived, Toshiba announced it was getting out of the HD DVD business. Nonetheless, this is a solid product that delivers a great picture. Upconvert of normal DVDs to 1080i looks great on a Sony 50-inch screen, much better than a Samsung it replaces, so I'm not entirely unhappy about buying an HD DVD player. However, once you've seen HD media, it is hard to go back. I also have a 50 titles in the LaserDisc format. Can I pick 'em or what?Digital camera Review: Cheap HD DVD Player

It is exactly what it was intended to be, a cheap HD DVD. Ethernet doesn't work, nor did downloading an ISO image with the firmware update and burning it to CD/DVD work. I am waiting on an update from Toshiba that will hopefully fix the ethernet issue. Tried both DHCP and Static settings. BTW I often read these and question people's ability to properly operate the equipment but I am an IT Engineer for a local news station and I set these services up on an enterprise level. I have around 25 devices in my home that use these same services fine. The boot time is about a minute or better which annoys everyone who uses it but it does do nice upscale converting of old DVDs, on a 37" 720p LCD you can hardly tell a difference between HD-DVD and regular DVDs the upscaling is that good.Digital camera Review: Cheap, upconverter, free DVD's....great for the living room

I have the PS3 (blu ray) and the X-Box 360 and the HD-DVD attachment. So why did I go out and buy this product? Well, so I can move the video game systems to the bedroom and have an upconverter/HD-DVD player in the living room. I don't own any blu-rays and I have a couple of HD-DVD's. But with this, at a bad time, I get "300" and "the Bourne Identity" for free, along with the send in to receive 5 free HD-DVD's. So that's 7 HD-DVD's and a HD-DVD player/upconverter for $95....that's a steal in my book. Also, with a few great titles coming out before the format is finally dead at a very low price, there's no reason not to snag this bad boy before they are completely gone.
I know the war is over and blu ray won out, but it's still HD and the prices on the DVD's will continue to fall, so grab as many of those movies as quickly as you can. For example "Heroes" on HD-DVD....price will continue to drop and you'll probably be able to get it for around $30 in the coming months. "I Am Legend" will be available for around $20 on HD-DVD, but more pricey on blu ray....another one I'll get on HD-DVD format. Then there are 2 of my favorite movies: "Eternal Sunshine" and "Lost in Translation". Both on HD-DVD for only $15 a piece here on Amazon; another steal.
There are a few movies still out there that I'll grab in the coming months and I'm pleased with this product for the sole purpose of watching movies (standard DVD and HD-DVD) from time to time. People criticize those who still by HD-DVD players, but to me, I bought it because it's an upconverter.

This is my first time that Amazon shipped to me a product that no works. And I tried to claim, but the process by Internet is VERY COMPLEX! So, I prefered leave this matter!

NOTE/BE AWARE - Unless the HD Display/TV has an HDMI/DVI interconnect, and it supports copy protection, the HD DVD player will NOT output 720p/1080i for HD DVD disks that have copy protection. It will not output 720p/1080i, in any case, for the component video interconnect for HD DVD's that have copy protection. It will output 480i/480p for copy protected HD DVD's on the component video interconnect. (Reference page 14 of the owner's manual.)
