Digital camera reviews of Toshiba HD-A30 1080p HD DVD PlayerDigital camera Review: 1080p/24 force option? Summary: 4 Stars
Not! The ps3 offers forced 1080p/24 options, but not Toshiba. Many TVs can display 24 hzt option, but only if forced, otherwise they revert to their native 60 hz display, which is not capable of 1080p/24 without 3:2 pull down. Excellent picture/sound if TV can display 1080p/24.
Digital camera Review: 24p HD that works right now Summary: 4 Stars
If you've done any homework on the HD disc formats, you know what a bargain this is.
For the $, its a sensational add on to your Hi-Def setup. The picture looks like film on my Mitsubishi HC3000 projector; smooth, organic, chroma to luminance delay is gone.
After too many years, we can spin HD movies at home, and, we're getting a much better glimpse of what the director saw.
If you don't want to spend $500-$1,000 for a Blu ray player, don't! Get the A30 & enjoy hi-def now!
After you sample this technology, I think you'll agree, (besides the BD30 which still lacks Ethernet) Blu is 9-18 months behind. Don't know how the war will end, but I don't begrudge a penny of this purchase.
Digital camera Review: 3rd Gen Should be better than 2nd Gen Summary: 3 Stars
This is Toshiba's 3rd Generation HD DVD player. Other then being slimmer then the HD-A20, I don't know that it offers anything in the way of improvements. Load times are still SLOOOWWW! On average time to open DVD tray door is 38 seconds, and then it takes another 38 seconds after closing the door for the DVD to start playing. This is better than the 1st gen players, but not better than the 2nd gen players.
If you bought this player for it's '1080p60' capability, then you will find that it works, but offers little if anything in the way of improvement over '1080i'. This is due to the fact that it was implemented incorrectly by Toshiba. Fortunately for me it's '1080p24' capability works correctly.
I suppose Toshiba could offer firmware updates to fix these 2 flaws, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I would only recommend getting this HD DVD player if your TV set supports 1080p24 input. Otherwise I would get the HD-A2 or HD-A3 and save a $100. Or if you can afford it, get the HD-XA2 for it's superior standard DVD upconverting capabilities.
Digital camera Review: 5 free disk offer lie Summary: 3 Stars
My comment isn't about the quality or format et al. I also am one of those who own both formats. What I am curious about is if, in either format, did anyone out there ever actually receive those five free blu-ray or HD-DVD disks promised when you mailed in the coupon or whatever it was. I faithfully mailed in the coupon, original receipt and the UPC bar code cut from the side of the box. It's now been over four months and I have received nothing from either manufacturer. Truth be told the five free disk offer(s) were a major enticement in purchasing each machine and I hope someone can suggest where to lodge a complaint over what is beginning to appear is nothing short of intentional misrepresentation.
Digital camera Review: A Great Player Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the A-30 because the price was right ($150) and 7 free DVD's were included. Since then, Toshiba has dropped out of the "war", and already there are many movies for less than $10 (Deep Discount), and even more for under $15. Prices will decrease even more in the near future, so I plan on building a sizable collection of HD titles. Needless to say, they look incredibly good on this player, and the upconversion of standard DVD's is superb. So far, after over a month of heavy usage, I have had no operational problems. Therefore, for viewing HD- and standard DVD movies, I highly recommend the A-30.
