Digital camera reviews of Toshiba HD-A35 1080p HD DVD PlayerDigital camera Review: A very good HDDVD player Summary: 4 Stars
This is my forst HD DVD player. I have watched 5 HD DVDs and two standard DVDs. On the most part the performance has been excellent. One HD DVD that I put into the unit straight from the box, brand new, would not play the last ten minutes of the movie. Since all of the other DVDs did well, I must consider the possibility that that HDDVD may have been defective in manufacture.
Complaints are that this unit seems high priced compared to other HD DVD players, in spite of the advanced features it has; it takes a long time to start up from the standby state; and the controls didn't seem to work as smoothily as I was accustomed to from my past DVD players.
The key feature that pushed me toward this higher priced Toshiba was the additional audio modes supported. I haven tried those features yet. I must say that I was very impressed with the way it up converted standard DVDs. They looked great.
As for whether one buys HD DVD or BlueRay, that is a hard debate. This unit cost as much as BlueRay would have cost, so the financial advantage for HD DVD seems to be going away. Today there is more program material on BlueRay, but HD DVD has some other pluses too in backward compatibility and internet software updates.
Digital camera Review: A35 HD DVD Player Summary: 4 Stars
This was my first HD DVD player and although a bit pricey- it is an amazing picture! I sat down and watched Planet Earth (HD) in complete awe.
I had read in reviews that it is a bit slow to start up and it definitely is but in the scheme of things it really isn't that bad. It takes a few seconds but not enough to make me want to send the player back.
I love this player!
Digital camera Review: A35 is AWESOME Summary: 5 Stars
This player is fabulous. Fantastic video and the audio is superb. The two free HD DVD's are nice too, but even better is the FIVE free GD DVD rebate you get from Toshiba.com. This player and the bonuses is a no brainer.
Digital camera Review: A35 not ready for prime time Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this DVD player after researching all comparable players and formats. Everything I read led me to believe that this player was top of the line and worth every penny of its expensive price tag. Boy was I wrong.
After hooking up the player, I watched King Kong for ten minutes and I was blown away. It looked incredible. The problem was it only played for ten minutes then froze. Repeatedly. After doing more online research I found that there is a firmwear update that can be installed to hopefully help with this problem. Just hooking up the player to an ethernet line was a pain and the firmware update never fully downloaded. After 3 hours I just unplugged the unit and now it won't do anything.
It's unbelievable to me that a 'third' generation player would need to have firmware upgrades required to be installed by the consumer just so it operates properly.
