Digital camera reviews of Underwater Housing Case for Canon Powershot SD1100, SD1000, SD890IS, SD850IS, SD790IS SD770IS, SD750, SD630, Digital CamerasDigital camera Review: Good economical solution for underwater pics Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this for our trip to Hawaii. Used it heavily on our snorkeling trips. Overall, it worked very well. It did what I expected it to do. It's not a perfect solution, but for what it is, I'm quite pleased with it.
Pro's:
* Cost: if you look at the alternatives, this is a very economical solution. I looked extensively for waterproof cameras, and many had leakage issues, or the quality of picture was poor, or they were very expensive... or a combination of the above.
* Depth: If you have a little bit of extra air in the case, you can go under water deeper than other standard 6' or 10' cameras.
* photo quality/versatility: you get to control this because it's your real camera. When i looked at water proof cameras in the <$300 range, the picture and video quality really couldn't compare to what I was able to get using my standard camera with this pouch.
Con's:
* Fit: as a couple others have said, since this is a generic pouch, it won't fit your camera snugly. you need to take care to keep your lens in the middle of the lens cylinder. Otherwise you'll have black arches in your picture.
* Be careful sealing: you need to do a good job of sealing it. It's not hard to do. Just be diligent about it.
* Controls: it can be harder to dork around with your camera controls. It's not hard to press buttons, but if you have switches on your camera (like a switch to go from pictures to movies, or a lever for zooming in & out), it can be much more cumbersome to hit them with this pouch. If everything is button controlled, it's not an issue.
* viewfinder/display screen. It can be a real pain in the butt to see the display screen and/or the viewfinder. Part of this is because of the brightness of the surroundings, and part of this is because of the extra layer of material of the case. I ended up just taking several extra pictures to help make sure i had at least 1 of what i wanted.
Solutions: a couple suggestions to help deal with some of the "con's"
* Fit: I rolled up tissue paper and set it at the bottom underneath the camera. This helped prop the camera up to the right height so that the lens was in the middle of the cylinder. This also ended up helping the camera not move side to side. Also, find the smallest size model that fits your camera. Don't "play it safe" and buy a bigger size.
* Sealing: Make sure you're really diligent about this, and test it. I also put a tissue in the place you roll the opening closed. Make sure you don't leave any tissue in the seal itself. The tissue in the roll is a great warning to alert you if there's a small leak. The tissue will soak up the leak and let you see there's a problem before your camera soaks up the water.
Overall, I'd definitely recommend this.
Digital camera Review: Good for price Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this product for an upcoming trip to Mexico to swim with whale sharks. The product did keep my camera waterproof, however even though I ordered the correct case to fit my camera it was VERY loose. This caused a black ring around my photos if I did not hold the camera in the correct position. This is very hard to do in a rough sea.
Digital camera Review: Good value Summary: 3 Stars
Good value. As other reviews have referenced, it's rather difficult to keep the camera centered in the lens well. If the camera gets off center, you will loose part of the photo. I used it running the rapids through the Grand Canyon, where you tend to think about things other than centering the camera in the case. After some practice, I developed a technique for holding the camera/case that produced good results. I never had any problems with water or sand getting inside the case. It was easy to clean the lens cover and the case held up well over a week on the river. It's a lot less expensive than buying a high end case or waterproof camera.
Digital camera Review: Great Product Summary: 5 Stars
I used this product while snorkeling in Kauai with my Canon SD1000. This worked very well and the video produced by my camera were excellent and very clear. Only thing I would say as a negative is the pouch is quite a bit larger then the camera so it does move arround a bit while in there. Another thing is that the buttons on my camera are a little tough to push or slide the switch to change modes while in the pouch. I kinda expected these limitation by reading some of the other reviews but for the $ this is a great product and I highly recommend it. This is going to save me a ton of $ from buying waterproof disposable cameras. Having video while snorkeling is so much more fun.
Digital camera Review: Great Product! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this casing for my husbands camera for a trip to Jamaica. We used it underwater and the photos came out great. Good price for a simple switch for our camera to become an underwater camera. I would suggest it to anyone who needs it for those few shots they need in the water.
