Digital camera Review: Good first scanner

This is my first scanner, so I can't do good comparisons.
It has a good sensitivity: terrain here is not flat and I'm surrounded by high buildings and cell phone towers, but I can hear Talkabout transmissions several miles, mountains and buildings away. It is also good for aircraft communications, I can hear a tower located 30 km (~20 miles) away. The remote control feature is great, I did some interesting things using it.
Negative points:
* no alpha tags (and so many frequencies to remember);
* audible 60 Hz noise;
* telescopic antenna connector with a poor design;
* there is an annoying beep when it is turned on and
* the remote control feature requires RS232, I had to buy a USB/RS232 adapter.

The Bearcat BCT8 is a great scanner for anyone wanting an analog scanner. It's easy to program and operate once you find the frequencies and talk group IDs you need. The volume and sound quality is good. Channel rejection is very good in keeping adjacent channels from bleeding over. I grew up with a Police scanner in my house. My Mom enjoyed listening to it. I had my own for a while, but my cat knocked it off the desk and it broke. For the past two years I haven't had one at all. On a spur of the moment I decided to buy a new one. I always owned a Radio shack scanner. This time I went for the better quality Uniden. The quality is definitely better. It's not made out of cheap plastic. This one is sturdy and built with quality in mind. I also love the buttons. They all light up. It looks sleek.
Programming it is a piece of cake. I didn't use the enclosed software. I just programmed it manually with the buttons. That is the way I've always programmed scanners and I am comfortable with that. Found all my local town and state police. I heard two Police chases just in the past two days. Sirens blaring and engines revving as the cops tried to catch the bad guys. It was great!! Love hearing the Fire department as well. You don't miss a beat with this scanner. Everything is right at your fingertips.
Also programmed about 50 Airline frequencies in. It's fun to listen to the planes as they travel all day. Some Police departments have gone all digital which means you will not pick them up with this scanner. However many towns haven't. So find out if your town is digital first before you make the purchase. Other than that this scanner is bringing me so much joy. I Love it! I highly recommend it.

This is the 1st scanner i have used since I was a young boy listening to my dad's old BearCat unit. I find it easy to operate for casual use and the preprogramming picks up Tampa PD and HillsCounty Fire Rescue though on preset EMS, not preseit police. I am having trouble programming for trunking which is necessary to follow HillsCounty Sheriffs office, but I'm roaming the net to find tips.
