Digital camera Review: Best Bang for the Buck! Works great, as long as you realize IR limitations. Summary: 5 Stars
This was a Christmas present for my 65 yr old father who is hard of hearing (inverted ear drums). After a LOT of research I whittled the choices to 3 (TV Ears, the DSI Wireless Serene TV-Direct Listener, and this item by Bebe Sounds). Both TV Ears and the DSI device were over 100 dollars, and TV ears looks very cheap and flimsy. I couldn't decide so I asked a guy in my office who is 63 and deaf in one ear to pick which one he would prefer. This is what he said, "TV Ears looks like it would be heavy after a while and pull on your ears. I don't like the DSI because you have to put in ear plugs. Us old dudes like good old fashioned headphones." We he was right, my father said the same thing. The item itself was easy to hook up. Three steps: Plug in the power to the transmitter, plug the audio cables from the transmitter into the back of the TV (He has a LCD), and pop in a couple of batteries into the head set, you're done. The audio is transmitted via Infra-red (IR) like your TV remote control. So that means it's line-of-sight. Audio quality is good as long as you face the TV/transmitter. It does cut out if you turn your head or try to walk around, but that is not the fault of this device. That is the fault of the limitations of IR and all TV listeners that use the technology. If you want mobility you'll have to go with Radio Frequency (RF) or Bluetooth, there aren't many out there and they are really expensive. My father uses them primarily at night to save the sanity of everyone else and he's completely happy with them. In the end, that's all that matters. Why spend more?
Digital camera Review: Best buy Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned two TV ears prior to buying this unit. It is so much better, I can't beleive the it. Highly recomended for the hard of hearing. No more charging batteries like TV ears, just drop in a couple AAA's and you are off and running.
Digital camera Review: Buy TV EARS instead - Don't waste your money on these Summary: 2 Stars
I had these for three months and both the headset that came with and the extra headset I purchased had stopped working. Not to mention that these I had to replace the batteries every week. No charger option. You had to be perfectly aligned with the main unit at all times. Lots of regular static when out of direct line. this means if your slouching on the couch instead of sitting up.
Get the TV Ears instead. they are more expensive but are so much better in reception. I can go anywhere in the room. They sit in a base when not in use and recharge. No need for batteries. You can buy at Costco for $4p (best deal anywhere).
Digital camera Review: Buy different wireless headphones Summary: 1 Stars
Here's the scoop on this product: It only works up to about 8 feet and the line between the headphones and the base has to be a STRAIGHT line on the SAME PLANE. So, for example, I wanted to use this while I was on the treadmill. I had to jimmy up the base onto the top of a corkboard (don't ask) so that it would be in direct line with the height of the headphones when I was on the treadmill. It would not work if the base was even an inch above or below the height of the headphones. I only bought infrared because my modem has had problems with interference from 900mHz phones and I didn't want to take the chance with the headphones. But there has GOT to be better infrared products out there than this. If you can achieve a straight line between the base and headphones (with nothing in between the phone and base), than, yes, the sound is fine.
