By cutting the treble and midrange to muffled insignificance. After reading reviews on this product i was a little uncertain on buying this product. Especially because 20$ crazy for good headphones. The first time i used these i had the wrong sized earbud attachments and the sound was poor. But, once i got the medium sized attachments on, the sound quality and bass quality increased 10x. This is the first time I have ever reviewed a product on Amazon, but I felt compelled to share my experience.
I orignally bought these in December 2007 and they were by far the best sounding headphones I had ever owned. I listen to mostly dance music and the bass is incredible, not to mention that they block outside noise almost entirely. However these headphones crapped out in May 2008. I took advantage of the one-year warranty and was sent a brand new replacement set about 4 weeks later.
This set lasted only two months, and in August 2008 (still covered by the warranty) I received another replacement pair of earbuds. This 3rd pair broke this past week, and now unfortunately I am outside the terms of the warranty. It's sad because when they worked it was pure musical bliss.
I'm giving three stars for the 15 months (minus the 8 or so weeks I had to wait for replacements) of awesome quality sound. I would have easily given five stars if they had lasted as long as the headphones I got for free on the airplane.

I bought these v-modas a couple of months ago. I love them so much that I just bought a second pair for myself and a pair for my wife.
The sound is excellent - better than that of my Shure E2Cs and other earphones I have tried. Sound isolation is also fabulous.
Highly recommended!
