Digital camera reviews of Verbatim 96781 Nano Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse - Black

Digital camera Review: Good alternative to other Nano Mice type small mice
Summary: 5 Stars

I went shopping for a small notebook mouse with a small adaptor plug, the part that plugs into your notebook USB connection. You see lots of cheaper mice with the usual large adaptors that stick out an inch and a half or more in length which you may bump into, damaging your USB port of adaptor. Theres a type of small mouse with very small adaptors in which the part that sticks out is around a quarter or half inch. Unfortunately these are very expensive around $30-$50 plus for other brands like Logitech. The Verbatim was the lowest price I could find at around $20 and seems to work as well as any other mouse and it has the small adaptor. The one thing about the Logitech is that their more expensive version specifically claims to have a very long battery life. I have no idea if the Verbatim matches it or comes close.

Digital camera Review: Good mouse
Summary: 5 Stars

The nano USB connector is great for notebook. Mouse is comfortable too. My hand cramps with some of these little mice but this one I'm fine with. Had it a year now, it's still going strong.

I became a fan of these "nano" USB receivers when I bought a similar Logitech V450 mouse for my netbook - even though it sounds like a little thing, it's so nice not to have to remove the receiver from the USB port when putting the machine away. I got this Verbatim for my larger laptop for the same reason. The USB receiver is about 1/16" longer on the Verbatim, noticeable when you look at them side by side, but still tiny enough not to matter. Two things make me rate the Verbatim at 5 stars: (1) the USB receiver can be stored in a slot on the bottom of the mouse, where the Logitech requires you to open the battery compartment and store it inside, and (2) the Verbatim is about $10 less. Don't misunderstand, the Logitech is a great mouse and I don't regret buying it for a minute, but if I had it to do over I'd keep that extra $10 in my pocket!

UPDATE: After use in more settings I did find that another reviewer's comment about awkwardness on different surfaces was true. On my dark wood-grained desk, it appears not to get traction (if that's the right word) consistently and becomes a little frustrating to use. Fortunately I use it mostly elsewhere - my normal mousepad for this guy is a black leather sofa - so it's not a problem for me.

UPDATE Oct 2009: with more experience with nano receivers I have to say my initial enthusiasm for this guy has worn off. The tracking is very spotty on a variety of surfaces. I'm keeping mine as a backup but it is no longer in regular use.

Digital camera Review: Good option for a wireless mouse...

There's good points and some not so good for the Verbatim 96781 Nano Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse -- and some of the not so good are going to be good for others.
INTALLATION: Could NOT be easier. Simply plug in the small dongle-thingy (the small bit in the photo) to a USB port. Your laptop should then recognize it. Next, if necessary press the connect button on the bottom of the mouse and you're in business with a working mouse. (The mouse came with installation software but I never bothered to use it, everything worked fine.)
RESPONSE: I had to go into setting and turn the responsiveness all the way to the lowest setting and even then it was a bit more responsive than I liked (especially after a cup of coffee of two). It was great for some things but for others a bit too much for me -- but for most people this is a plus not a minus.
SIZE: It was a good comfortable size to use. Some people with larger hands may find it too small. I've been using mini-mice so it was a bit bigger than I liked for the small place where I use my laptop. However, it didn't need a mouse pad or reflective surface to work well so it all evened out.
TIME OUTS: If the mouse is left inactive for a period of time it goes off-line/to sleep and you need to press the button to bring it back and working. Many times, I had to actually press the Connect button again to get it to work. But then I read a lot of documents and often would use the space bar to page down and wouldn't touch the mouse for minutes at a time. Other users, would I suspect, never run into this problem.
OVERALL: I'd recommend this mouse. The small dongle means you could just leave it plugged in when traveling since it barely sticks out (making it less likely to loose it). The size is nice for small hands and small spaces (not as small as a mini) but very comfortable to use. It's wireless so you don't have to worry about cords and that's a very big plus when traveling with a laptop.

I don't usually use a wireless mouse for my notebook, because I think the receivers are too bulky and I'm generally a careless person, putting things down wherever I want and then forgetting where they are an hour later.

This mouse is perfect for my needs. The receiver fits neatly into the bottom of the mouse for easy storage (it also functions as an "off" button for the mouse to conserve battery power), and it will be hard for me to misplace it this way. Also, the receiver is VERY small, and protrudes about a half inch out of the USB port so it isn't at all cumbersome and I can leave it plugged in while my computer is sleeping.

My only problem with the mouse is that it isn't really "notebook" size. It's more of a regular desktop computer size, but it's fine.

All in all, a great mouse. Easy plug it in and go. No need to use any installing software. Of course, I'm using a newer (less than 2 years) Mac. I tried it on an older model Dell running Windows XP and it didn't work. I probably needed to install something but I didn't bother.
