Digital camera Review: A Great Hard Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I must say that is Hard Drive met and beat my needs. Thanks for a great product.

Digital camera Review: A Technoplegic point of View
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought two of these from Amazon in April of 2009 for about $105.00 each. Now I wish I had purchased 10 of them. They have been that reliable for me and they are now $135.00.
I have had them running nonstop from the day I got them.
I have never reconfigured anything on them. Just plugged them into my PC and started using them.
I have never downloaded any of the programs that are prompted by the new external hard drive (ExHD).
I have full usage of my hard drive space.
My PCs recognize each different drive separately and there is never any confusion or issue moving them from one PC to the other and no issues using them both at the same time on either of my PCs.

I have never had any issues of them heating up or making noise. I was so paranoid from reading reviews about them getting hot and crapping out on people that I check them often. I touch them and can feel no perceptible heat. I listen to them and hear no noise at all. (It is very quiet in my home office; amazingly quiet in fact.)
Now I will tell you that I lay them on their side; my logic being that this leaves none of the ventilation slots blocked and I think they get very good cross ventilation but seriously when I touch them they feel actually cool to my touch.

The only issue I have with them, and really it is minor, is that I have to unplug them from my PC if I am going to reboot the PC. After I reboot the PC I plug them; in a moment it will begin doing a scan of the ExHD and I hit cancel. Then it opens another window and wants to load some other program and again I hit cancel, it does and then all systems are a go.

I have them on a separate battery backup from my PC batteries. Maybe a wee of overkill but it makes me feel better.

I feel the need to tell you that I am a "Technoplegic" (my term for someone that computer geeks look at and say "you're too stupid to own a computer") and basically these units have been plug and play and very, very easy to use, very reliable. Once I got it through my thick Welsh/Irish skull that I needed to unplug the ExHD from my PC when I reboot the PC... Well then they were a wee bit of heaven on earth to use.

Mind you now, it hasn't been a year yet, only nine months... so... maybe I will be saying "DowgGowneGobilityGookHorsefeathers" in another three months or so. I have no clue. But if I do I will post an update and tell you everything that I have to do and go through with Western Digital... Good or bad issues in dealing with them.

Again, I am a Technoplegic so please forgive my lack of geek terms and phrases; my lack of "use this and that program to override this and that other program" and all the other geeky, however smart sounding dribble the Tachnopros have memorized.

Digital camera Review: A bit slow, but couldn't expect more from a USB drive
Summary: 4 Stars

UPDATE 2008-02-05:
Everything has been running fine. This thing is very quiet. I have it sitting in my entertainment center, hooked up to a TViX M4000 as a slave drive. It works great, powers down when the TViX shuts down, comes on when it start up. Absolutely great for what it is.

UPDATE 2007-11-25:
So far so good with replacement drive...
The drive is properly spinning down after periods of inactivity, and it shuts itself off completely when disconnected or when the computer powers down. It appears to be running cool, but it's hard to tell since there's no side of the case that physically touches or sinks heat from the drive. Transfer speeds are about 30-35MB/sec on my machine, not too bad.

Not blazing fast
Doesn't appear to run hot
No power switch (turns itself on/off, spins down drive after inactivity)
USB plug is mini-B
Works well as TViX M4000 slave device

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Got this home and plugged it into my WinXP SP2 computer. It took about 2 minutes to recognize. Next, formatted it NTFS and filled it with about 500GB of files, overnight. The drive was making some funny noises, like the read heads were resetting, but the speed of the transfer didn't seem affected so it was left to finish. The next morning the transfer was complete, so a verify was started... failed on all the files... windows had problems reading the directories too. Reboot, no help... disconnecting the drive and reconnecting seems to have helped, but who knows what is going on with this thing. Perhaps I got a lemon? Perhaps the USB cable was bad? We'll find out after it's returned. For now, 1 star rating.

Digital camera Review: A data center on a shelf
Summary: 5 Stars

It is very hard to argue with the amount of storage that one of these drives offer. If you have been in the industry for awhile, you can remember when a terabyte of data meant an entire data center of storage!

These drives are quite and they format to NTFS quickly as long as you remember to specify quick format!! I have been pleased enough with the drive that I now own 6 of them. My laptop now has 6 terabyte of storage to work with! Since I do a lot of music and video work, that is important to me. Considering the fact that these drives now run about $229 when on sale, why would you not buy one?

Keep in mind that if you connect multiple drives, you will want to use different controlled ports on your computer; not just a USB hub (the reason is each dedicated port of a USB 2.0 can only work at a total of 400 MB/S. That means if you have multiple drives on the same controlled port that they are sharing that speed (this will really show up if you are moving data from one drive to another on the same hub). Remember, having 4 ports on your computer does not mean that they are 4 seperately controlled ports! Check your users manual or call technical support for your product to see how many seperately controlled ports you really have.

I have now moved all of my video, photos, and music to these drives (3 terabyte) and use the other three terabyte as mirrored drives (fail safe)and it is all easily accessable on my computer and on my network through my computer.

I have had the first drive for 5 months now and have added the others as they went on sale. I have not had any boot issues (mentioned in other reviews) and all of the lights go off when the computer is powered down. I am running Vista Ultimate with all updates and I am using an IBM ThinkPad with current BIOS.

Great drives!!!

Digital camera Review: A good buy!
Summary: 5 Stars

That's a good product and works as we want. The only problem is because you need to connect it to the energy and another cable in to the USP port, but all the rest is good.
